A few more days and I can get sets out again
« on: November 26, 2003, 04:21:17 PM »
I have a few more days to go of the deer season and I am going to hit it again. Sure seems like a long week, LOL. I shot two deer on Tuesday and have to get them cut, ground and wrapped. I am planning on using the scraps for bait in dirtholes. I am assuming that will work, just have to cover the dirtholes with grass to be legal. I traded my deer hides for some shell fish oil. Wow does that stuff reek!!! Note to self-do not open bottle in a pick-up. My kids sure gave me a dirty look. Next I need to get some anis oil, vanilla and cherry extract, and marshmellows. I have some bacon grease and burnt bacon bits to do some bait. Still waiting on some traps, used 1.5's. A buddy of mine has some 110's he doesn't use, but is going to let me use for the rats. I can't wait to get these things going again.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Just an FYI too though...personally I've had better luck with bait earlier in the season than I did later for coons. I read somewhere where this had to do more with approach of mating season more than anything else, plus a bit of the factor of coons "denning up" during cold spells. Its not a true hibernation, but is a shut down of activity for shorter periods if there is a sudden cold snap.
I've had much better luck with gland lures and very "loud" predator baits at land sets for coons late in season. My better set responses late in season seem to come from following: red fox gland lure or urine, bobcat gland lure or urine, mink gland lure or urine. (and again, in combination with a loud canine bait seems to work for me at dirhole sets for coons in very late season).
Had some mixed success with coyote gland lure or urines on late coons...didn't seem to get as consistent results as I did from red fox or bobcat, and even mink lures. A good, loud and sweet smelling coon lure will also work, as will fish...but again I do seem to have better luck on coons if I stick to something with much more odor and the gland or urine added in combination.
