  • I would rather be shooting!!
I am thinking of ordering some 40 grain V-Max for sure but am also considering ordering some 35 grain as well. I will be shooting them out of a Remington 700 SPS Varmint with a 1 in 14" twist and a 26" barrel. I would really like to hear from the folks that have the same rifle as I but anyone shooting these bullets out of their 22-250 I would like to hear from as well. Do they group well. My Hornady 7th edition has no load information for the 35 grain V-Max so I wrote them and hope to hear back from them soon. I am thinking the reason they did not include the information for the 35 grain V-Max is because maybe it was never meant to be fired out of a 22-250 because of the velocity. I could be wrong there but just maybe. For some reason I have it in my head that the 40 V-Max will shoot great out of my rifle. It is just a hunch. :o ;D I would still prefer to keep them under 4,000 FPS like maybe 3,900 or so. Everything I have read you get over 4,000 FPS and you can ruin your barrel in a hurry. I am still not sure that 3,900 FPS would help much but I shoot Molly coated bullets for the most part so that should help. Well let me know thanks and take care Dale

Mine is a Ruger 1-V 22-250 with 1:14 twist, 24" barrel
40 V-max with 41 gr H380 is the best load for it. clocked at 3820 fps.
Have a target tacked to the wall of my garage; 3 shots @ 100 = .158" c-c.

Dale - my Encore with a 26" heavy barrel in 22-250 doesn't like the 40 grain V-max as well as heavier bullets.  The 50 grain V-max and Winchester 45 grain hollow points seem to group the best.  I thought the 40's were probably a bit hot for my gun - groups opened up quite a bit.

;) Dale, the 35 grain is a short stubby bullet that would loose speed quickly..I have shot them in my Hornet and .222...I would not mess with them in a .22-250...I have shot 30 grain Berger in my .22-250 Improved, and have currently loaded some 40 grain Vmax over a heavy charge of IMR 3031....in my .22-250 Improved...I have shot them at target and found them very accurate...as yet I have not shot any coyotes with them...due to the fact I have been camping and doing some traveling..will have some information on them in the next week or so...I did load Barnes 36 grain in my .22-250 several years ago and shot a number of chucks in Pa. with those..I found them very accurate, but not everyone has the same experience...depending on the ranges you will shoot, I like the 50 grain...it can be driven faster than a 55, and according to the boys it is as long as the old lead pointed 55 grain so it has lots going for it....If you need more info...I can look over my notes...I know I shot some in my std. 22-250's at least at target...I think maybe due to elevation, I get faster speeds than folks at lower elevations, but I am almost certain, I get over 4000fps with the 40 grain from my old .22-250.....

I am thinking of the 35 grain V-Max mostly as a target bullet and I my take a couple short range Groundhogs with it. I would think maybe 200 yards or less. I was out at the range yesterday shooting the 50 grain V-max at the 300 yards steel plates that are about 8" round. I was surprized the energy it had at 300 yards it was denting what looked like 3/8" plate steel and part of the bullet fused to the plate. They also have a very large saw blade about 5' round hanging down there. I bet it must weigh at least a couple hunderd pounds and was also surprized that little bullet was able to move that big blade. I know I would would not want to be mister Groundhod being hit at that range with that bullet. Take care Dale

ping pong ball and a golf ball. each starts at the same 200 mph. which one you wanna be hit with at 200 yards?

the ping pong ball loses velocity as fast as it got it.

golf ball's gonna hurt.

stick with the 50 grain or so, they have better ballistics and will hit harder, and the smaller charges will help your barrel last a bit longer.

My Hornady 7th edition says the max load of 4064 is 37.00 grains. Could you tell me how many garins is hefty? You have the same rifle and same rate of twist as mine so I would kind of like to know. What works in your still may not work in mine though. I bought and just finished loading 48 rounds with the left over H-380 I had on hand with the 40 grain V-Max. I loaded 8 rounds each starting at 38 grains and increased a half grain at a time until I reached 40.5 grains. 41 grains is a max load and am not real sure how you could even fit it in the case other than shaking it down a whole bunch. At 40.5 grains I have to give it a couple taps to get it below the top of the neck using Winchester brass. The funny thing is with the Hornady brass it will take 40.5 grains of H-380 with out any problem. The case walls must be thicker on the Winchester brass. It looks like work is starting to pick up so I don't know when I am going to make it to the range to test the new loads I loaded tonight. Well you guys take care Dale

Shot the 40s, I had difficulty getting them to perform, even in a 1 14 twist.  Maybe from a 223. What I mean by "perform" is that I couldn't get accuracy, 2" groups were best I could do.
