Rimfire for farm gun suggestions?

I just got a 452 American 22lr and I was amazed at how accurate it is.

I've seen H&R Sportsters at the local toy store for $165 and I hear that they are way more accurate then they should be for the money.  Single shot and if you need, you can have H&R factory fit any of the rimfire except the .17M2.

Something else that but more money would be the T/C Contender in a carbine platform and a barrel in the FNH 5.7X28 would be a wicked compromise between the .22 Mag and a .223 if using the varmint bullet version.

Have fun choosing, it just adds to the fun.

I would look at the Ruger 10/22 Carbine in stainless steel with the all weather stock. To me this would be a great farm rifle. I also would load it with the CCI 40 grain Velocitors.

That would be a great barn gun.
Something to leave in the barn and not worry about it and always work when you want ot need it to take a vermin, small game or preditor.

  That's exactly what i bought my Rem. 552 for, yes the finish on the stock is shot, but the metal isn't rusty, and it hasn't been cleaned in more than 20 years it's been sitting there.  EVERY time i pick it up, it works perfectly!

Just to throw a curve, have you considered rebarreling the 5mm? That is a nice cartridge in a niche all it's own.

i was not sure the 5mm could be turned into a 22 mag or 17 HMR.
This is what convinced me to get a Marlin.  When the 17 HMR came out and people mentioned the 5mm Marlin said if the round does not catch on they will rebarrel the guns to 22 mag.

Happy ending all round. My farm gun is a 10/22 with a Single-Six in .22 mag for a back up. Thing of getting a .357 or 9mm to replace the single six. The city problems are making it to the country and the .22 is way lite for 2 legged pole cats

Yes sir. I searched several times and never could come up with anything promising. The ones I contacted couldn't find a reamer, weren't sure about being able to make a blank fit, or didn't want to mess with it. I am not a machinist so wouldn't want to tackle it myself.

The fellar I bought my 5mm centerfire kit from years ago has been talking for a few years of making a complete rifle with rimfire and centerfire capability. But his price keeps on rising, and just a lot of talk, not even a prototype yet.

With a flick of the thumb the hammer goes from rimfire to center fire.  Same barrel, same frame and gun.
The next question is what does a 5mm custome barrel cost for a T/C.
what is the optimum barrel length for a 5mm?  just make it that lenght in either a pistol, carbine, or rifle length.

Yes sir, I imagine a contender would work fine. I tried mgm and bullberry last year. They didn't have the chamber reamer. I never got a response from JD Jones at SSK with 3 tries. I figured he would be the one that could have done it. I don't have a contender anymore though. Traded it the first of the year to a fellow on this board. I got tired of the money pit and inconsistency with barrels and accuracy. It would shoot perfect most of the time, but for no rhyme or reason act up and I would go chasing the problem. Got tired of the negatives. Was thinking of trying the handi rifles, but it appears they have their fair share of problems as well.

  OK, well now that you have three farm rifles, you may find that you have a problem.  I lived on a 45 acre farm with mixed woods and fields for 14 years.  There were lots of critters, small and medium, that were turning up around the house, in the 2 acre yard.

  What I found was that if I had more than one potential farm rifle in the rack, then when I ran in to get it to dispatch a critter, I got brain freeze.  I wasted valuable time starting at the rack, trying to figure out which rifle would be the "best" for the critter and range at hand, and them fumbling for different ammunition.  Meanwhile, the critter was getting away, or getting out of range, or getting closer to the house. 

  Finally, I decided to only have a .22 LR rifle at hand, with hi-power rounds, with copper clad round nose bullets, sporting a 4 power compact scope.  This turned out to be totally fine for everything.   I knew exactly where it would hit and for how far out.  If I didn't have time to grab muffs, then the occasional shot would not create too much damage to my ears.

  I highly recommend that you use this method.  Morover, if you choose to go the .22 Mag route, then you had better always have those muffs on, because it is extremely loud and will do quick and serious ear damage!

  Just my experience.

This maybe off topic as this is a RIMFIRE board, but what would be the parent case for the center fire conversion of the 5MM? A hornet? Years ago a dealer told me he had a 5MM complete with loading dies. I thought he was BSing me.

  BTW, i have a left hand Rem. 5mm mag., how many of you have seen one of those?
