2nd Cannon kit pics: 18th Century Navy Mount
« on: June 20, 2010, 10:58:02 PM »
There are a lot of pics for th Navy Mount Kit - plus I used hi-res because I was taking photos of the Instruction Sheet.

I apologize up front for attaching 6 pics at a time, instead of adding them inside the message body - because I use Flickr to host them, it's a pain to perform all the steps for each image; faster for me to attach six at a time.

Lower Res images are on my Flickr.com link:

Hi-res follows, enjoy!

Whew!  This is the last set.

In case there's confusion about the order of the instructions, this set includes front and back full-size photos of the plans, plus four half-size photos too.

While I can't think of anything missed in these photos, if there's something not clear - ask away!

enjoy!

That's a cool set of nicely detailed instructions. I'm kinda surprised I've never seen them before. They would be useful as is, or if one wanted to scale up and make a larger version on a big lathe. Either way, looks like a great project for someone wanting a step by step.

Thanks much for posting. Probably a good sticky for the cannon plans section.  :)

I would say these kits are from the 1960's ......

What's scary is I have one of these little lathes sitting on a shelf in the garage.

How large a piece can it take?

I think it will go about 7" between centers but it won't be able to drill more than half that.  I have one in my garage also; I should dig it out and clean it up for old times' sake.  I would use my Logan, though, even for something that would fit the Unimat.

Those bores are not drilled to completion .

You're right, Gary, but they supplied aluminum stock for the barrel, so they never intended it to be fired (they actually explicitly state it should never be fired).  That's probably why they made sure the plans don't make a functional barrel.  Of course, if you wanted to make it using some steel stock...

I have a 6" lathe sitting in storage for when the home shop is finished,  I have access to a machine shop at work with a
6" & a 12" lathe and milling machine,  I know someone with a machine shop with a bigger lathe for the large
projects like my 40MM Whitworth I have been working crazy hours to keep the bills paid but that is changing
I will be freeing up some time for the things I need/want to do. The little lathe I probably will end up selling I never use it.

Within its size limitations, the Unimat will handle aluminum and brass well but not steel.  The "ways" are two steel rods which makes it very flexible and you can't take very heavy cuts on steel work pieces.
