30-30 carbine
« on: June 16, 2010, 07:10:04 PM »
Does anybody know if Marlin makes a 30-30 with a 16" or a 18" barrel. If so what's the model.

I don't think Marlin currently catalog a .30-30 with a barrel shorter than 20."  Making the 20" barrled carbine an even shorter one isn't a monumentally difficult task, and there are plenty of pre-owned 336's out there than can be had cheap, so picking one of those up and then cropping the barrel and mag tube to suit is certainly an option.  My first firearm was a 336C, which I've had since age 12.  It was originally a 20" carbine with full length magazine.  I am currently having the local gunsmith do a half-magazine conversion to it and having a little cut off the end of the barrel, too.

Sometimes, while cruising the used gunracks, a 16" Marauder or an 18" Texan (both straight-gripped models) may also be found.

The marauders were only mfg. in 1963 & 64 but like already noted lots have been croped into the 16 & 1/4" configeration. There are several other differences in the orgional marauders that I like but if your goal is just a short barrel a gunsmith can tickle your fancy purty quickly..  ;D

I've got an 18 inch Texan.  You could have my dog and my wife before that. ;D  It killed my first two deer both on the same day about 50 years ago, has killed many more and still looks showroom new.

Just a few years ago, Marlin sold the 336 "Spikehorn," in  .30-30 with a 16 inch barrel.  I see them around at gunshows, and never considered them rare.
