38-55 is Going Moose Hunting in Maine - Any Load Advice
« on: June 21, 2010, 01:11:46 AM »
Well, I drew a Bull permit for this year in Wildlife Management District 13 during the October hunt and am planning to use my 38-55 Cowboy. I have a bunch of  Lyman 375449 gas checked bullets cast in #2 alloy that weigh 264gr. I know I can work up a load, but I thought I would see if anyone already has a good moose size recipe for the 38-55 cowboy. Has anyone taken a moose with their 38-55? Thanks, Brett

My load in my 38-55 goes like this
sarco#738 255 grain in the 38-55 BHN 10 with IMR 3031 33.5
the bullet just touces the land.I would say FPS arournd Mid: 1700 no gas checks and no barrel leading.
I shoot a williams FPR rear Peep sight and a .405 front fiber optic.I can get out to hit steel plates each time out to 500 yards.
