Done gone and done it....
« on: November 09, 2009, 11:05:32 AM »
Placed the order for a wood-stocked XL7 in .30-06. Should have it by monday next week...

I see alot on here about the plastic stocked xl7, and having bought one in .270 for my dad last year, i know they're keepers.  Wondering if anyone else has bit the bullet and gotten one with the wood stock.  I'd expect them to perform similarly, but its always good to hear experience....

PS => I tried searching, but didnt find anything remotely related...

Wow.... 172 reads, and no replies.... not even a tiny little "YOU MORON" from some antimarlinite.... I guess I've been away for too long...

She came in today.  Shop called me about 9am, was there to pick it up at 10... had them put on a Leupold 4-12x40 scope... will be sighting it in tomarrow morning...

We await the shooting report  ;)

I cannot say I have seen the Marlin bolt action let alone handled one although I am led to believe they do import them here as I seem to recall reading a gun test on one.

Let me just say that I hope the rifle turns out all you would wish and then some  ;D

The .30-06 is in indeed a shooter.  The barrel heats up something quick, and that makes a pretty big change in PoI.  Three quick succession(2-3 minutes between) shots are about 1.5-2" at 100 yds, with 180 Grain remington express corelokts.  150 corelokts are about the same, but about 6" higher, but seem to get wilder than the 180's when the barrel heats up more.

However, that barrel is so thin, to get a true gauge of its accuracy I'm gonna hafta let the barrel cool for 15-20 minutes between shots.  Two shots separated by a 10 minute ceasefire at the range(first shot on a total cold bore), about 1/2" apart.   3rd shot(barrel still very warm after 5 more minutes) was a flyer by about 1-1.5"

Sadly, ran out of time before I could do an all cold bore 3 shot group.

It can be said that 3 cold bore shots does not make a group, but I would argue that my judgement is based on KNOWING where that first(and only) shot(which is cold bore) is going to hit.  I want to know that 300yds, that bullet is going where I intend for it to go. That said, wow it takes some patience with this gun at the range. I suppose I can always put a heavier barrel on it later if the mood strikes me...

but all in all, a great gun. ESPECIALLY for the price.  How many $400 guns do you know of, with a walnut stock... and it can shoot.  I'm sure my marksman skills are not doing the rifle justice.

what kind of extractor does it have?
Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

Like you said.....it's the FIRST shot that counts!

But....Check the tightness (torque) on the action screws.   Some factories hire gorillas to tighten the action screws;  this amplifies group size as the barrel heats up.

I'd like to see a pic of your rifle.  I don't think I've seen the walnut model.

Dave, I have the plastic stocked XL7 in '06 and can't wait till Saturday (Oklahoma rifle season opens) to try to shed some innocent blood with mine. Are you hunting with yours this year? Charlie

BTW I liked the look of the wood stocked ones. I might buy an aftermarket stock for mine some day.
