Vetrans Beware What You Say
« on: July 06, 2010, 04:34:26 PM »
   Got this in an email but I know it for fact. I get asked the same questions every VA visit, just sometimes phrased differantly. Such as, " Do you ever get depressed? Have you ever thought of harming yourself?" ect. Having been warned to be careful what you tell them, I always answer no but I had to laugh one time. Jason, my son, was with me when the doc asked if I ever got depressed. Jason got right in his face and asked the doc," If you had as many things wrong with you as dad does, got treated the way the VA treats him, might you not get depressed now and then?" The doc sheepishly agreed it was normal under the circumstances. Jason just nodded and said, " Yeah, thought so!" That's my son.  ;D  Still I always watch what I say and here's why;

 Veterans, B E W A R E !
"I had a doctors appointment at the local VA clinic yesterday and found something very interesting I would like to pass along.. While going through triage before seeing the doctor, I was asked at the end of the exam, three questions:

(1. Did I feel stressed?)

(2. Did I feel threatened?)

(3. Did I feel like doing harm to someone?)

The nurse then informed me, if I had answered yes to any of the questions, I would have lost my concealed carry permit as it would have gone into my medical records and the VA would have reported it to Homeland Security. I am a Viet Nam vet and 15 year cc permit holder. Looks like they are going after us vets.
Be forewarned and be aware. The Obama administration has gone on record as considering veterans and gun owners as potential terrorists. If you are a veteran, you've been warned. If you know veterans, please pass this on to them.

This is just one of the predjudices against vets. Whenever buying a firearm I noticed it took the max amount of time allowed, then 7 days, to get aproved through background checks every single time and it took like 30 minutes to an hour for my son. Finally I asked why? The guy sheepishly told me it was because I was a Vietnam Vet!

Your right SH. I just read the bio of Buffy St. Marie, and because of her protesting everything from the treatment of the American Indian to the over-lording of government, her career in the United States was killed by order of the Lyndon Johnson administration. Over night the radios quit playing her music.

Yea, I know the drill as well.  Along with the routine answers.

Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I think you are takiing bad info....when a dealer calls in a purchase, he/she has no reason why a delay happens; the reason is NOT given!!!! There are two national call recieving centers, and if the call reciever has a question, it is referred to a supervisor...if the supervisor cannot "clear" the purchase, then it goes to delay status, and at that point I believe a LEO (Federal) checks into the transfer. Being a Viet Nam vet, or any other vet, simply is NOT going to put you into the "Delay" status. More then likely, someone undesireable with a similar name and/or DOB is causing the glich.
If it is a concern to you, you can obtain info on-line on how to apply for, and get, a PIN, and once you have that, supply the clerk who is doing the phone call with your PIN, and you should be good to go. Really not a big deal.
I have such a glich in my background, caused by me, and I am constantly being delayed, but then cleared. Doesn't concern me enough to go through the process of obtaining a PIN, but maybe someday I might.

I received an email similar to this the first time back several years ago. It came about because of  H.R. 2640.

I've never had a Dr. or nurse at any of our VA hospitals in Oregon ask me any of these questions, but have been expecting it.

(Back in 2007)

On Saturday, The Washington Post reported [ see http://tinyurl.com/23cgqn ] that both the Democrats and the NRA leadership had reached a "deal" on legislation similar to the McCarthy bill. This "deal" involves a new bill that has been introduced by Rep. McCarthy (HR 2640) -- a bill that has not yet been posted on the Thomas legislative service. While all the legislative particulars are not yet available, one thing is clear: it is, as reported by the Post, a deal with Democrats. And it involves legislation introduced by the most anti-gun member of the House, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY).

Jun 13, 2007: This bill passed in the House of Representatives by voice vote. A record of each representative’s position was not kept.
Dec 19, 2007: This bill passed in the Senate with changes by Unanimous Consent. A record of each senator’s position was not kept

    Passed House   Jun 13, 2007

This bill became law. It was signed by............................ (George Bush.) "MY WORDS" another anti-gun, open border president.

Hawaii asks you to self declare mental health issues twice with each purchase; once for permit to acquire, another at registration. A yes answer is of course grounds for denial. Since all combat troops go through screenings now, you have to interpret the question when answering or all vets would be disqualified.

I was asked the question at my VA clinic. I simply answered candidly that such was not my frame of mind...not even thinking that it could have been a "trick" question...but likely it is..

The real question everyone should be asking, is why any "American Citizen" should have to ask permission from "ANYONE", if they can spend their own money, and purchase, or own a firearm. That's what everyone SHOULD BE ASKING. I remember the outrage when "checks" first started, but it died down, into acceptance, just like a loss of a right always does, and now the complaining is about a "slow check", instead of a "no check".
Freedoms are lost in increments, and the next increment is just around the corner, and everyone will complain, but will comply.
If your gun check is too slow, and you want a fix, you might try Contacting John McCain and one of his committees. He's real interested in your gun rights. ;)

Myself, and every single veteran I know are asked every single visit. It is VA policy and has been for a few years now. I can remember my VA doctor telling me about it when they first started. I even had to sign forms each doctor's visit answering those questions.  If you aren't being asked then someone isn't doing their job. The only BS is that it's happening.

As far the delay in buying weapons, at the time it was through a single dealer and I suspect the problem may have been with him. Now I'm aproved, years later, in a matter of minutes.

I have  only been to the local VA center in my home town for my annual exam. I would have to see ifit were different in St. Paul at the main VA hospital.

I have been ask that question on forum that I fill out and also by my nurse, on the forum I put no and my answer to the nurse is at 75, country going down hill fast, back hurts all the time, 17 % do not have jobs I have a right to get depressed :) also on a further note most all doctors offices are going to computer generated files on patients, it is my understanding that this is also goverment mandated which will give big brother an open door to your health issues as well as insurance companys and as was mentioned. I had a relitive turned down for her gun permit because she had a problem in a bar, not her doing over 20 yrs ago. There is lots of info. out there on each of us if one knows how to get to it.

Perhaps the "base" hospitals as Redhawk1 says are even more adamant about the questioning of combat veterans, and perhaps non-combat vets. There are several here that say the DO ask the questions so why doubt them. If they say they do, then they do.

Why thank you Dee. It's nice to have a voice of reason here. :) I was suspicious of their asking from the get go and after being asked I'm almost always handed to form to fill out and sign as well. You realise how easy a wrong answer could screw up more than just your CCW Permit? Think what it could do to your benifits and most importantly, what it could do to your life! People with suicidal thoughts often get locked away for their own good! I think all of us here were wise enough that those thoughts occured to us when first asked. well, most of us at least. I feel there are 3 kinds of people in the world. Those that apreciate veterans, those that quickly forget veterans, and those that fear veterans.

It's not the telling of the truth that should be questioned. It's the matter of the right to ask the question in the first place. You may be a very honest man but are you willing to answer any question asked of you just because someone else want's to pry in your buiseness?
