first deer with encore
« on: November 28, 2003, 04:49:17 PM »
i have  an encore pistol with 15" barrel, 2-7 burris scope in a .308. i just sighted it in today with 125gr. nosler ballistic tips. wind was blowing terrable. about 30 mph gusts. it was still holding a 2" group at 100 yd. the temp. was dropping so i decided to head to the swamp to try to kill one with my new encore. i had my rifle in the truck and was going to take it also. but at the last minute i changed my mind. i knew yall would give me fits about that if yall found out. 4:00 3 spike bucks came in the field. decided not to try one of them. i wanted a big ole doe. then the big ole doe showed up but she had 2 spotted fawns with her. couldnt shoot mama then. then a 5 point walks in. small rack but a big bodied deer. i think they call them management bucks on tv. i watched him for about 20 minutes, then he started picking a fight with a spike. 5:10 its getting late, but ican see fairly well. i look at him through my scope at 125 yd and just realize that pistol scopes dont draw light like my rifle scopes do. then it hit me, 20 years ago when i killed my first deer with a ithica 12 ga. auto. i was 12 years old. i killed a 5 point buck and how fitting it would be for my fist thompson kill to be a 5 point also. so i got a good prop in my shooting house put the cross hairs on his shoulder and squeezed the trigger. he never moved out of his tracks. dead as a door nail. what a rush i thought you had to wait on a big buck to be a trophy, but this is a trophy to me a hunt ill never forget. i am hooked for life.
