Something Stupid
« on: November 20, 2003, 02:30:31 PM »
After shooting muzzle loaders for 10 years, I did something really stupid. I forgot to remove the ramrod loaded on top of 2 pellets (100) and a 250 grain sabot.  I cannot describe the recoil, but the rod hit the target but was never found.  The rifle was a 50 cal. Traditions, and it still shoots good. Anyone else ever done this or will admit to it. Russ

Ya should have screwed a razorhead to the front and done that during archery season. LOL

Glad you and the rifle are still in one piece though.

Kevin..  Sounds like your patch was not thick enough to really engrave the rifling!

I've seen it-- once. Another brand of ML, the action shrapneled-- a few cuts, but it could have been far worse. I'd have the rifle looked at before firing it again. Add the weight of your ramrod to that 250 gr. sabot-- wow!

Completely disassembled and could fine no problems, cleaned and reinstalled the scope and have fired about 15 rounds shoots fine. Getting ready for Missouri Blackpowder season. Sure  hope it is better than the rifle season. Wind, fog, rain, warm, now predicting snow. Russ

Yep, I know a guy who looks a lot like me that did it once.  The recoil was so severe the scope came back and broke his glasses in half.  It was a fiberglas ramrod and cost about $20 too!  Never found it.

The worst oops that I ever saw was a lady that didn't put the top on her horn, set the horn on the bench beside her, and shot her flinter.  Those horn fragments will cut the snot out of you.

One I read about is the guy trying his new rifle.  He threw a "bunch" of powder down the bore, stuffed a "wad" of toilet paper on top of the charge, and blew off his left hand when he fired the rifle.

Once, a guy at the range was shooting his kentuky rifle for the first time.  He loaded from the can - just poured down a bunch of powder - put a slug on top and took a standing shot.  When he bounced off the fence about six feet behind the line, he picked up his rifle with his good arm - the one that wasn't numb - and went home.

So jdJman, shooting a ramrod is on the lower order of what can go wrong while shooting.  And if most shooters haven't done it, its probably because the guy shooting next to them said something before the shot.

was at a meat shoot once, were they stopped the shoot for a lunch break, , well one of the guys had just finished loading his rifle when they closed the range, rather than shoot it off, he simply put his ramrod in the barrel to remind himself it was loaded.when we came back from lunch and they reopened the range, the guy remember he was already loaded but forgot about the ramrod, stepped up to the line, fired, came back to the bench to reload, couldn't find his ramrod, guys asked him if he took it out of the barrel, nope. looked thru the binnocks and there it was sticking in the target, in the black ring, messed up his rod a little bit, but was fixable.

:-D Have observed that happening several times with a ram rod.  I,personally have never done it,but then again,ya never knkow what the future sill hold.  I think Randy has a good point about checking your rifle for safety, and you also state that it shoots ok and could not find any problems.  Kind gives you an idea what your rifle will take as a surprise.  I have loaded a dry ball several times and that is kinda embarassing to do.  Also fergot to put a ball down once.  I remember a guy shooting from an open powder can( actually a coffee can filled with powder).  Kinda livened things up a little when that went off.  Give it time,we all do stupid things but............................it depends on if our learning curve is a straight line or not.  Stay safe......King
