Cannon scale.
« on: July 04, 2010, 06:09:16 AM »
Happy 4th of July!!

I bought a boat howitzer from Armorer 77. Which is a great barrel, by the way!

I am trying to scale the wheels. Watch the following clip, other that the obvious safety issues, what size do you think the wheels are?  14" ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvrnqCrPth0&feature=related

I am thinking for my barrel, 18x2" wheels (Amish, wood, steel rims) will be about right, with a split trail carriage about 38" long.

Update: I am looking for something on this order of scale and proportion.  Thanks

Any input invited, thanks.

The wheels in that first video appear to be about knee height.  The center of my knee is 22" from the floor.  I may be taller that that guy but I think the wheels are bigger than 14".

Zulu, do you thinks 24" wheels would be too big?  I did a cardboard pattern, and right now 20" seems to be about right.

I vote for 18-20 inch.  The Wheels in the first video look right , the carriage in the second looks too big.  That is a neat cannon Armor77 built.

I love the barrel, it has a nice touch of lathe work in it and it is somewhat  "period", so I want to make a nice carriage for it. On top of that, it's gb bore!! ;D

I think 24" is too big.  I agree with DD.  18" - 20".  Nice barrel. :o
