Winchester 94 oops!!
« on: November 30, 2008, 06:00:30 PM »
Need some help on my 94.
Last Saturday when I chambered a round, a second round inserted underneath the elevator plate.
I took the screw out of the lever hinge and elevator plate.
Now I can't get the elevator hinge screw back in place. :(
Any helpful hints would be appreciated?

the elevater plate has to be pushed up on from the bottom against spring tension then it is just a matter of wiggleing it until it screws in but just remember that the elevater plate pin holes will not line up unless u push on the spring tension.

The elevator screw is almost impossible to get in under spring tension. If missaligned and screwed in it can bend the elevator by squishishing the screw hole ends together.

Better way is to remove lever and and link from the action. Swivel the elevator so it points straight down away from the action, this will remove all spring tension from the elevator. Insert screw(s) and return elevator to it's position in the action. Replace lever and link and it is done.

MUCH easier than trying to get the screws in while under spring tension.

[Last Saturday when I chambered a round, a second round inserted underneath the elevator plate.]

It will most likely recur.   :(

That mis-direction/misfeed can sometimes occur with a slightly different-sized cartridge, but a common wear point for the Winchester 94 is the tip of the cartridge stop - integral to the bottom link - which allows the next shell in the mag to exit while the carrier/elevator is raised.

The fix is to either replace the lower link, or extend the tip of the stop via peening/swadging or a weld buildup.dressdown.

Maybe I'm not reading this right but it seems to me that you have a round chambered and another slipped under the elevator lever.....correct?  In this case, you cannot move the lever nor do anything  ???

Solution:  Take the magazine plug out in order to release the tension on the magazine spring.  Then, once the guts have been removed from the magazine (spring, follower, loaded rounds, etc) just dump the round out through the front of the magazine.  Seems easy enough.....but then again, maybe I'm not quite understanding what has happened with yours.  ???

I just noticed that your original posting was Nov of '08.  I'm sure that by now you've got the round out....either by messing things up or doing it right.  Hopefully you were successful with the round removal.

Yep, took to gunsmith and replace a previously broken elevator
