Lee FCD with 30/30 Loads
« on: July 09, 2010, 06:46:13 PM »
Loaded up some starter 30/30 loads today using Hornady 170 Grain FP over 26 grains of IMR 3031 with the OAL at 2.240. After crimping with a fairly stout crimp with a Lee FCD die, the OAL is set back to 2.228 to 2.230. When I set up the die, I had the the FCD touching the shell holder then turned it in another 1/2 turn. What am I doing wrong? Will I experience any safety/pressure issues shooting the loads that are set back 2.228 to 2.230? Are they safe to shoot? My dummy round chambers and ejects fine out of my Marlin 336. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks, Gingus

The Lee Factory Crimp Die uses a collet to press against the side of the bullet.  It shouldn't set your bullet back in the case.  However, I've never measured mine after crimping to see if it shortens the cartridge.   From what you've written, it seems like you're setting up the die properly.  However, the Lee instructions for setting up the Factory Crimp Die is here.

However, your load of 3031 looks good and I don't believe that little change in OAL is going to change pressure enough to make a difference.

Thanks PawPaw. My post should have read OAL was set back anywhere from 2.528-2.530 not 2.228 to 2.230. My OAL prior to crimping was 2.540, so the bullet was seated deeper .010 to .012. Is that enough to cause concern? Max book length is 2.550. Thanks, Gingus

I wouldn't be concerned about that little bit.  However, I would re-read the instructions and make sure you're setting the die correctly.
