Old 12 ga single, HELP!!! need identified!
« on: December 15, 2010, 05:18:35 PM »
As the title indicates, I have this old Damascus barrel 12 ga single shot, shotgun that has no identifying marks except a half worn off eagle crest on the butt plate!

I was told it was probably made in the 1880's or 90's, but can't find anything to indicate that it ever existed.
If you can identify anything about this gun, please let me know and if it has any kind of value other than a conversation piece that I have hanging over the mantle!

It has a 32" Damascus barrel, a shell ejector, the bluing is actually brown and the only lettering stamped in it is on the left side of the receiver it says WORLD'S CHALLENGE EJECTOR all in upper case and along the same side just above this and on the barrel it says CHOKE BORED also in upper case, and then there is that eagle crest on the butt plate!
There is a serial number just behind the trigger guard on the bottom and in front of the grip.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Ken.

When you take the barrel off are there any proof marks on the bottom near the chamber. It looks American but not a Crecent model I remember and Iver Johnson would have an owl on the butt plate so maybe Hopkins&Allen. The action really has the shape of the more modern Ithaca mod.66 though breakdown is different

Thanks S.E,AK!

I checked  on the net for all the Hopkins&Allen shotguns that I could find, but I couldn't find anything that came close to this gun!
I ain't going to give up yet, I will identify it or go bald pulling my 2 hairs I have left out!  ;D

I don't know if it would be of any help but I believe the animal on the buttplate would be called a "griffin" in some circles.
If you're gonna be stupid ya gotta be tuff

I think that it is a new forehand model that is pictured in the  fall 1900 sears catalog.
