Question for veterans, especially recent ones.
« on: July 01, 2010, 11:52:54 AM »
  The American Legion post I am a member of is an award winning post. We do a lot of good things for veterans and the community. I am on a committee which is charged with increasing the membership of the post. Naturally, we want to recruit any veteran who is willing, but we want to especially concentrate on the crop of more recent veterans. Too many of us "gray heads"..we'll need replacements.
  I would like to get a list of recently returned veterans to the area, but for obvious reasons the VA is not eager to provide that information.
  If you have suggestions on how to get such info, tell me please...

  Right now, we are working on ideas as to what might attract the newer veterans. Here's some of what we have come up with so far;

 1) Put up a table at local venues such as stock car, motorcycle and horse events.

 2) We are putting on a Legion event inviting the veterans & community to it in mid August. Free burgers, dogs, events, bounce pen & other things for kids.

 3) keeping younger veterans with young families in mind, having a "family event" for Legionaires once a month.

 4) Turning the entire post toward a "family friendly" environment..we figure these young veterans have just spent much time away from family and now may want to include them in their Legion post .

   Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

As the result of a few die-hard smokers our VFW Post almost died, they changed the smoking policy, made a more family friendly facility and its alive and well again.  Even as a smoker the smell and smoke kept me and my family away, we are back and enjoying it more than ever.  MAtter of fact, we will be there Saturday morning for breakfast and a Flag Raising Event.

+1 on the facebook group, but also if you could come up with a program to help veterans find jobs in these tough economic times that could also help. I know when I got out of the Navy I would have welcomed someone/anyone to reach out a helping hand. Finding a job was stressful and scary to say the least. Knowing someone was there to help you out and make the transition easier might go a long way to building a relationship with your vererans.

Thanks guys;
   Someone more savvy than I has just started our Facebook site. One of our members is being groomed right now to take over the veterans representative position for the county and can counsel veterans how to get their fully earned benefits.
  The smoking thing is no problem, that's already taken care of by state law. We have a couple members who have mobile restaurants who are (from our parking lot) offering special meals at special deals, certain nights of the week, with the public invited. (examples; complete meal of 10 wings w/fries & slaw (generous porportions) $6 ...coming soon, full meals of "Beef on weck" (a local specialty) or fish fry (haddock) with curly cues, slaw etc $5..  We have some land behind the post we wil convert to rec area w/shelter.
  Of course, jobs are a big challenge for everybody now, especially in this area but we do a lot of social networking and find some that way,  plus our county representative is always alert for any openings for employment.

     Your tips have been helpful so far, thank you...any fresh ideas on how to identify/locate returning veterans ?
