Browning BAR
« on: October 19, 2010, 12:43:04 PM »
Hello,
Trying to help a friend find a accurate load for his BAR 30.06. He just bought the rifle and doesn't have much time to sight it in. Looking for a decent round for Deer
and Black Bear. Any suggestions on where to start.....Thanks...J

I'd go with something off the shelf if time is limited.

If you plan to reload, consider obtaining small base dies and trim your cases every time.

I have been using Remington Core Lokt for years...150 gr core lokt.  I have only used it on deer and have had very good results.  Occasionally a coyote gets in the way.

If you do plan to shoot reloads, stay away from slower burning powders. I have heard but not experienced, slower burning powders may cause improper action cycling which could harm the action. I have loads with IMR4895 and 165 gr. BTSP and spire points that are VERY accurate in my '06 BAR and have never had cycling problems. IMR4895 does tend to be a little "dirty" however.

By the way....I do use RCBS small base dies. I did have problems with standard base dies manufactured by several manufacturers despite numerous tweaks. I switched to the SB dies and didn't have a lick of trouble. I know, the use of SB dies will spark a lot of comments, but I can't argue with the results.

Very good advice given!
I load for two Bar's both 30-06. I use RCBS small base dies, IMR-4895 powder and 150 Remington Core-Lokt bullets. Both guns will keep'um under 1.5"@100yards and everyone knows the Core-Lokt bullets have probably filled more freezers than any other bullet.

GOOD SHOOTING!

My limited experience (two BAR's) has shown both liked the Rem. green box 180 gr.which I use on black bear with good results. One of the rifles is BOSS equipped and I have dialed it in for Federal FUSION 165 gr. for deer, good performance.Only complaint on the fine BAR is:fully outfitted, the rascal gets heavy towards the end of the day.

I just sighted in my friends BAR 30.06 with Remington green box 150 CL. Very accurate. I have used that load alot , years ago, on Texas whitetail and hogs. Plenty of poop. I had an M1 Garand that shot the Federal Blue Box 150gr (Sierra flat base) like a match load!  I had a boss who had an older, first run Belgium made BAR in 30.06, and would not cycle anything but 180gr loads. Good luck, let us know what you end up with.
