Got the go ahead from the lady to purchase a new rifle at the start of the new year. i know its a little ways away but i gotta plan this out. I have a $850 budget. My all time dream rifle is a Ruger no. 1. In my opinion they are one of the most classy and beautiful guns i have ever seen. So that right there would pretty much eat my budget up buying off gunbroker and having it shipped to my local shop and such. On the other hand a more practical idea would be to buy a encore and my normal yearly gun allowance would cover a new barrel/scope each year. Now on to caliber. I own a 30-06 and several shotguns and .22 and I want something BIG. I dont know WHY I want a big bore, I have no dangerous game here in NY, I have no plans to go to Africa but for some reason a Ruger No. 1 in .375 H&H just seems "it". But then on the more practical side again I could get the Encore in .375H&H and if i didnt like it i could sell the barrel/trade the barrel for something different. Should I buy my "dream" rifle in a more mild big bore like a 45-70 or settle for the encore and have other options? any other ideas are welcome!

My 2 cents is that if you are going to buy a #1, you should buy a thumper. 45/70 is a GREAT choice, I have one and it is my favorite! I also like the 300HH...very classic! I think the 375HH in the tropical rifle has an overly heavy barrel and doesn't balance well for me. You should at least handle one.
Good Luck!

Go with the #1. Next yr. buy the Encore frame & continue from there. If your heart is set on a 375, buy it. If you handload it can be downloaded for deer, etc. The 45/70 IS a great choice but, if it is not YOUR first choice you won't be happy.
