458" cup point bullets
« on: July 07, 2010, 08:31:11 PM »
Anyone know a source of .458" cup point bullets? I have heard they are tough on vermin when their cups are filled with heavy grease (hydrostatic/hydraulic shock??). Would a regular hollow-point work just as well when filled with a heavy grease? What I need is something that will enhance expansion at low velocities. Any ideas?

Thanks, Dinny

Just curious, what are you shooting and what are you shooting it out of?

Could you fill a hollow point with wax ? Wouldn't be near as messy as any kind of grease. I know the devastation that my 300gr HP 454 Casulls and 350gr HP 500 S&W mags do without any help. You must be wanting to blow something up pretty bad with a faster expanding 45-70 bullet.

I need a reduced-noise load for shooting vermin raccoons that local farmers have damaging their crops. Anything that can assist in rapid deaths from a reduced velocity load is greatly appreciated. This is for a 45-70 handi rifle.

Thanks, Dinny

Hi Dinny,

The 45-70 is way overkill on a critter like a raccoon and could ricochet a long distance after passing through the body.  Use a .22 with CCI stingers or Rem Yellow-jackets.

A center-fire option would be any 224 cal with Hornady's 40gr V-max at around 2200fps

If you need a larger caliber, go with a 38 special and use a max load with a double ended wad-cutter in a rifle.

BTW, The grease will not stay in the nose and would just make a mess.

Dinny, why don't you try the collar button with a light charge of Unique?

A lead round ball loaded with Unique of Red Dot powder should be good for dispatching raccoons.   Simple, cheap, and not too loud.

Actually, the Lyman Gould bullet works rather well, especially if you fill the cavity with your choice of contents and use an inverted cap or primer on top.   ;D ;D ;D

What range are you planning on going after these coons at?  I've used everything from a 45-70 collarbutton at 1100 fps to a .177 8 gr pointed hard pellet at 850 fps (head shots). THey're not especially tough critters.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!
