220 Swift Ackley????????
« on: January 14, 2007, 08:42:06 AM »
I'm thinking of reaming my new Adams and Bennet barrel for my Savge from 220 to 220 Ackley before I put it on my action. Anyone have experience with this caliber? The good and the bad. I know its way overbore but I bought it for pure speed.

No direct experience, but depending on what twist you have, the high capacity .22's are great for long distance shooting with the heavy bullets (75+g). Any reason you don't want to see what it will do with the reg case, then later re-chamber?

its 1 in 14 twist so I'm not sure about the long heavy bullets. I'm planning on using it for coyotes and planning on developing a load for 40 to 55 grain plastic tipped bullets.

Unless you just need the semi-wildcat cartridge, the standard .220 should do just fine.

I would recomand you save your money. With that slow of a twist your limited to lite bullets and pushing them acouple 100`s ft faster don`t really get you much, and you`ll be doing good to get another 100 fps. If your wanting something to reach out there I just had a .22-6mm built. With a 1 in 8 twist I`m pushing 80 gr. .22 cal. bullets to alittle over 3,500 fps. With the heavy bullets I getting 1/2 the wind drift you can get with the best loads from a .22-250. Take a look at www.sharpshooterssupply.com Fred will build yo a barrel that will shoot. Just getting started with mine, but am alittle under 1/2 moa now.

I'm wanting to push the light bullets fast. An extra 100 to 150 fps would be nice. Or to even get standard .220 swift velocitey with a little more powder and lower pressure. I'm not real worried about barrel life as using for coyotes as 1000 rounds would be many years of shooting.

100 to 150 fps is about as fast as you could throw a bullet. Is that worth the money? Would the varmint know the difference? Then again, what's the fun in a factory chambering? Your money.
