Lots of pond fishing
« on: July 04, 2010, 05:29:52 PM »
Haven't hit any big water lately, but we've been tearing it up on family farm ponds. My oldest caught a 10lb channel two weeks ago on some chicken liver.  When I put it on the scale, I couldn't believe it was only 10lbs. The head on that dude was 7" across just in front of the gill slits.

Tons of bass up to 5lbs, some 2-5lb cats, more bluegills than I can count.  In the last two trips, we've gone through 500 nightcrawlers, 6lbs of liver, 100 red worms, abd 5 packs of hotdogs.  Total time fishing is around 8 hours.

I love it for the kids.  Tons of action and nothing is better than hearing them yell and holler about a nice fish that they caught themselves!

kyelkhunter,    How big are these ponds.  On the surface it does not seem they could handle a steady diet of that kind of fishing pressure.  Maybe they were under fished and in need of some harvesting.  Sounds like a good time though.  Regards,  BT

One is about an acre in size, the other is about half acre.  The owners feed the fish on a regular basis, so they're pretty healthy.  The big one does have an over-abundance of 'gills in it, but they don't let anyone keep fish.  The bass in the large pond have really jumped in average size from the previous couple of years, which doesn't make sense with all the 'gills, but hey, we roll with it.  We haven't caught as many 'gills this year as in the last couple, so maybe the bass are big enough to have started to prey on them.
