A fun day at the range in WYTHEVILLE today!
« on: August 11, 2010, 05:38:49 PM »
Took the soda bottle mortar and a couple of hand cannons in golf-ball caliber.

Here's a shot of Stan at the end o the session launching a Top Flight #1 out into woodsville.

Second one is launching a 24 oz Kutztown Soda Works (PA) bottle of water (originally Sasparilla) down the 100 yard range.

Blue skies and white smoke; nothin' like it.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Stan with his gloves brings a new meaning to the words "Hand Cannon"! And in Golf Ball size, too! Wow! BoomLover

Yeah Dom, I don't think that's BP their using; hardly any smoke, and too much oomph! I tried to ID the can, but can't make it out. Not a good idea boys!

I never seen black powder behave like that, not with the fire ring.  Modern artillery, yes.

The can is IMR powder of some sort IMR 4198 I think.   I would like to report them.  Not to get them in trouble, but to keep them from hurting themselves.  The Concussion kicking up that large cloud of dust only comes from a massive massive over load.  It is only a matter of time befor som egets hurt with that thing.

They think they are in the clear as they are muzzle loading, they aren't.  Muzzle loaders over 50 cal. are destructive device.Destructive devices to be exempt also have to be replicas muzzle loaders.  They are firing projectiles, so no signaling device exemption.  There is no sporting use of that thing some that exemption is not available.

That is one of the scariest I have seen in a while.

Did you read the comments?

"No new footage will be posted until a new cannon can be made because the barrel started to swell/bulge/expand. The next cannon will be made with a harder alloy or thicker side wall. This cannon is 2 inches in diameter with a .5 inch hole bored into it. It has a fuse hole in the side and is about 1 foot in length. The handles are some steel tube welded on the barrel. The results were beyond expectations."

"The velocity of our projectile is actually very slow. Its a .50 cal lead ball. We fill the barrel with so much powder that the ball sits about an inch from the end of the barrel. All the ball does is act as a plug to keep the powder from coming out the end. The ring you see is the shock wave of the explosion breaking the sound barrier. The fire disappears but the ring keeps traveling. The lead ball probably only goes about 20 yards and is going very slow."

These Idiots won't live long.

One little stress riser in the barrel somewhere could have ended their day.  They were actually hammering the powder into the barrel.  They must have learned that one from Youtube.

Scarey!

So if their contraption is only .50 caliber, it's completely legal then? Although not a bright idea, that's for sure.

The only way to know for sure would be to write BATF with plans to build and get their written okey-dokey.

That's not good!

Some things ARE clear - replica or orignal of design pre-1898.  Muzzle loading; ctg loaded if "...".

I'm not sure what those folks were doing, what they were loading it with, nor what it was (if) a replica of.

Some things you DO just because the consequences of not DOING will have far reaching results.

You might as well put up a home video of you and your buddies robbing a 311 store.  What do these clowns use for brains?

Probably taken at random from dad's loading bench. Think what might have happened if they'd picked a can of Bullseye.

me and a friend used Norma R1 to blow up a short barrel many years ago , it was more like a long thunder mug than a cannon
bored out from a solid piece of steel
bore diameter approximately 30 mm , outer diameter I guess was approximately 100-120 mm
dont remember exact , it was a very long time ago
we used a wood plug

ok guys dont try this at home  ;D  or should I say  "hold my beer"   ;D

well it wasnt as dangerous as it sounds, we had it in a former military bunker when we set it off

Ahhhh yes.

Those were the  days when (for years) I KNEW I'd never live to see 21.   :o

At 63, I know better.

Know better about what?  chances of reaching 21, or foolhardy stunts.  ;D

I never for once doubted I would make 21, but at 62 I do wonder how I did it. I just wish I had the same luck when I bought a lottery ticket.
