Unertl scope on model 99
« on: September 20, 2010, 05:17:09 PM »
My eyes don't do too well with iron sights anymore, so I've been wanting to put a scope on an old Savage 99.  I have an old Unertl 1.5" target scope that I think would look good on the half octagonal barrel (30-30 rebarrel).  Tried to look up some pictures of a 99 with a Unertl, can't find the combination.  Before I get the barrel drilled and tapped for the blocks, anyone know of any reason not to do it?

:-\ Pat if this is the scope I am thinking of, it is very long for a hunting rifle..plus it would have external Adj. not handi when hunting deer..I personally, would put a nice small vari. power on the 99..I have a 6x on my .300, but that is becasue I had it  around..  ;)

Too long, too heavy, and too fragile for a deer rifle. 2X7 or 3X9 variable would be much better suited. Sell the target scope, for what it will bring you can buy a real good variable!

No doubt about it, it is long, heavy, externally adjusted, fragile.  If I was looking for practical, there is no question a modern scope would do the job better.  This rifle was made in 1916, there must have been some who would put a scope on the rifle before there were modern scopes.
In any case, the rifle is at the smith getting drilled and tapped.  I will post pictures when I get it back.
