35 Rem vs. 357 max

Have a possible deal on a 357 max handi, but I already have a 35 rem lever gun.  Isn't this just redundant?  From what I have heard, the two cartridges are pretty much equivalent.  Help?!

I wouldn't consider the 357 max to be the equivalent of the 35 remington. :-\
I'd take the 35 over the 357 any day. If I ever get another 357 barrel it's gonna become a 35 remington.

I like the ease of reloading straight wall 'pistol' cartridges, and the Max, by all accounts, shoots .38Spl. and .357Mag too.
Someday I just gotta get one. If I can convince myself that I can part with my 25-35 custom stub barrel and 20ga. Topper Deluxe I might swing it.

The 35 Rem on an SB2 frame can be safely loaded well over what any sane loaded 357Max can do, case capacity isn't even close between the two, 32.7gr water for the Maxi, 50.8gr water for the 35 Rem.  ;)

Like Tim said the .35 is superior,I have both and they both serve and purpose.When was the last time you saw .357 Max. ammo at Wallyworld?

Get the max.,if you dont like it I'm shure you wont have any problem selling or trading it. If your wallmart is like mine you probley wont see 35 rem. ammo eather.

Guns O Fun:  I don't know where you live or hunt, but think about this for a second.  Your out hunting Deer, and suddenly there is a Black Bear sneaking up on you.  Which do you want to have in your hand?

Been there, done that, know the drill.  Yes Black Bears do sneak up on people, they a far more preditory than Grizzlies.

I say this thinking that with most wives after three they seem to get involved and wanting you to limit the number of guns in the house.  They can come up with lots of other things to spend the money on.

It's funny that you mention that because I just read a hiker was attacked by a black bear in Kentucky. Not really hunting related as the hiker had nothing more than a pocket knife.

We don't allow folks to go out back on our place during the warmer bear months without a bear stopper.  I love my Maxis, but I don't consider them a bear stopper.  Yes, blackies can be very aggressive.  They're not uncommon here over 500 pounds.  Im looking forward to meeting one this Fall.......with the .45-70 ;)

45-70 is good Bear Medicine.

My favorite are the .35 Whelen and the .350 Rem Mag.  Basllistic twins and they too are devastating on Black Bears at close range over bait.

I have 2 in my back yard (10 acres). Guess I might start packing something other than a Diet Coke and a cell phone. I have never heard of them attacking anyone in my state. Have no idea of size. My neighbor said 300-500lbs (he has killed them in my back yard before it was mine, very illegal now) which I find difficult to believe. He said that getting them out was like rolling a sack of jelly through the woods.

I think the .357 Max can likely match 35 Rem factory loads.  But, as Tim says, the 35 Rem can be safely loaded 10-15% (300-350fps or so) hotter than factory loads in a modern rifle like an SB2 handi.

I don't think you 357Max can handle 200 to 250 gr bullets like the 35 Remington can.  All the loads I can find in my manuals show 180 gr the highest.

Remington lists the 35 Rem 200gr at 2080fps.  But I assume that is from a longer test barrel v. the typical 20" lever gun.

Do you think data like this can be applied to a Thompson Contender or G2 Contender?  My assumption is that the SB2 frames of the Handi are stronger than the Contender (not Encore)...or at least equal.  ???  What do you think?

TC's Contender barrel offerings kinda give you an idea of what their frame is suitable for, for example the 375 Win has a SAAMI MAP of 60kpsi and a .420" case head, that's likely the safe limit for the Contender frame, more pressure and the case head must be smaller, or bigger case head and the pressure must be lower.

SAMMI for the 35 Rem is 33.5KPSI but can be loaded higher in modern rifles/pistols, equal to what pressures the receiver can handle as long as you use safe reloading proceedures...case capacity is ~51 gr H2O.

SAAMI for the 357 Max is 48KCUP40KPSI, case capacity is ~38 gr H2O, it can also be loaded to the receiver's pressure limitations...

In these two cases the limit is on the BRASS SAAMI limit as well as the RECEIVER SAAMI limits.

The 35 Rem is 25% larger...it can handle ALL bullets at higher velocities and pressures than the 357 Max...there really ISN'T any comparison.  This is like comparing a Chevy 283 cid to a 383 cid...plain Jane or maxed out...the 383 will still blow the 283 out of the water...same with the 35 Rem vs 357 Max.

FYI...SAAMI MAP for the 375 Win is 52KCUP/60KPSI...same as the 356 Win or 358 Win, case capacity is ~57 gr H2O for all three

It's best NOT to make assumptions when it comes to shooting irons...one very good way to get into trouble is to try to extrapolate or interpolate.
