Basic question... front sight removal direciton...
« on: July 21, 2010, 06:45:46 PM »
spent an hour on net searching for 'which way to knock out front sight'... nothing.  Honestly.... So, which way do I drift it out.  Punch from right to push it out to the left side or punch it from the left to push it out to the right.

You'd think I'd get a dozen hits first time.  Stupid.!

Oh, I kroiled it already to get it loose.  Maybe I'll try heat tomorrow because it's probably glued in.

Thanks.  Be well...

See BC/Target front sight removal in the H&R FAQs and Help sticky, maybe there are some tips that will help.  ;)

Usually dovetailed sights are inserted from right to left and removed from left to right. That is kind of the standard.
There is always the exception though, I installed a front sight on a 1911 a few weeks ago and the taper on the front sights dovetail required it to be inserted from left to right.

Hope this helps.

Nope, I cut the dovetail in the slide for the front sight. Novak manufactures their sights with a 2 degree taper on the dovetail for "ease of installation". For some reason this one was cut in the opposite direction.

finally got it out.  Sight was glued in and VERY tight.  Used a hair dryer on hight and clamped it onto a lead block.  Mashed my brass punch even.... but sight was broken anyway.  Figure I'll file the new sight a little to get it in farther before it tightens.

Thanks all...
