Its good powder for the 223 and 30-30 and I use it a bit - meters very uniformly. It tends to foul a little more than some newer powders I think. As a ball powder I believe it has a very long shelf life and low throat erosion characteristics.

I'm not positive but I think its very close to BL-C2 and possibly 322 in performance maybe a couple other Hodgdon powders -BUT NOT interchangeable.  I'd check a burn rate chart to see where it falls.

I think its a good powder in the 308 family too but don't quote me on that. For a long time Winchester / Olin had only 748 and 760 for rifle powders and published load data for many cartridges with these two powders from 222 to 458.

748 is excellent in the 30-06 for the Garand. I also use it in the 223. It meters very nicely, every charge weighs exactly the same.

I'm starting to love it in my .300 Savage.Its doing just as well in lower end loads as it does at full throttle.I like the fact that it does seem to give lower barrel heat than IMR 3031 at similar velocities.

I started using it 25-30 years ago in my M-1 Garand. It was explained to me by my shooting coach that W-748 was specifically tailor made for the gas system of the Garand. I had not then or now ever questioned him on that fact. I do know that it worked great for that application, and it was the only powder I ever loaded in 2 service grade rifles and 1 match grade rifle. Shooting 168 and 180 gr Sierra match kings, in the old Lake City brass.

I also currently use it in 223 and 30-30. I have also used it in a variety of calibers, 243 win, 308 win, 257 rob, and 300 sav.

I think I have a can on my powder shelf right now.

I have used it for 7-30 Waters in my contender and it is the most accurate powder I have used. Unfortunately it is more sensitive to temp than Varget. When things get real cold, 748 doesn't work for me.

I use 748 in a 14 inch Contender chambered for 7X30 Waters. It is very accurate and produces 2490 FPS with a 120 grain Nosler. I like it.

I've pushed thousands of 30-30 rounds with it and maybe that many 223's.  It is the best in my 30-30 lever guns but dirty in my 223's.  I found 8 of the round steel cans on the Armorer's shelf at the Range in 2009 that were old but unopened.  Bought them all.  So far, they work great.

You will find it's about the same thing as military WC846. I use a lot of it in my 358 and 35 rem, as well as others. Burns clean, meters well, good stuff.

It's what I started loading with back in the very early 1970's and have been using it ever since.  30-30, 35 Remington, 243, 308 Win, 30-06, and some others. I don't use it exclusively, but it's what works the best for me in 30-30, followed closely by IMR 3031. I find that it even performs very well in some cast-bullet applications.  As others have said, it meters very nicely through powder measures. this is a very good powder, as is Winchester 760, but it doesn't get much recognition by most of the gunrag writers.  It's still in production, and will hopefully stay that way for the rest of my loading lifetime.

I started loading my 223s with BLC2 and H335, but when I tried W748 I switched, it was better.
