Need bullet measurements....AR15 in 300 Whisper/Fireball
« on: July 23, 2010, 04:19:34 AM »
I would like to purchase a long nose 30 caliber bullet mold like the Lyman 311299  or the RCBS .308-200-SILH 541 to load in my 300 "Fireball" AR15.  I have been shooting the RCBS 30-180, but it comes up a little short in the magazine, even with the bullet seated halfway out of the case.  I figgure that one of the bullet molds mentioned will do the trick, but I'm not sure what the length of the "nose" of the bullets are, and if they will be too long after seating in the Fireball aka Whisper case.

Does anyone have one of these molds and can give me a measurement of the nose length above the grease groove?

My Lyman 314299 from WW metal measures 1.180 in overall length as cast. The base to top of the driving band is .440.   The nose length is .740''.  I hope that helps.  rp

Ok, thanks!  I went out to the shop and grabbed my manuals.  Looks like that bullet will work nicely!  Based on the measurements that you gave me, I'll end up with a OAL of 2.18 - 2.2".  My max is about 2.24"....the extra bullet weight will be nice too.  I'll have to work up a load, but I can start with what is listed as minimum for the very heavy jacketed bullets and watch for pressure signs.

OOPS I see that you posted measurements for the 314299 not the 311299, the measurements will be completely different.  Thanks for the input though!

Does anyone have this mold, could I purchase a few that you have cast so that I can try them?

I use the 314299 in my 18" Contender barrel, sized to .310". Will put 50 rounds in about an inch at 100 yards using Mil surplus WC680 powder.
The throat in your barrel will determine if you should use the 314299 or the 311299. The nose on the 314299 is about .302", while the 311299 is usually .300".
If you want some 314299 e-mail me at (markdebwondergem@hotmail.com).

I have tried to use the RCBS 30-180 "as dropped" from the mold with wheel weights.  The bolt will not close and the bullet becomes lodged in the throat.  I have to size all of the bullets down to .309 or .308 for them to chamber.  I don't know if the bullets from the Lyman 314299 will size down that far...??
