35 Whelen Ammo

Hey yall.....I just bought a new 35 Whelen from the local gun shop.He was able to get some Core Lokt ammo but nothing else was available.Does anybody have a bead on any of the Federal Premium for the 35? I also read on another thread that Hornady had some out but I cant find anybody that will own up to having it.I live in Louisiana and this is my new "Primitive" weapon for Mississippi.Thanks in advance

Midway has the expensive stuff:  Nosler Custom and some Double Tap in stock but they are out of Federal.

Do you reload?  If not, here is your excuse to start.  30-06 brass is easily converted to 35 Whelen, and you can load anything from cast to pistol bullets, to 250 grain Nosler Partitions if you so desire.  I like the 225 grain NP in this round, though the Balistic Tip makes for a great deer bullet where a little quicker opening is desired.  I have used Rem factory ammo in this caliber in the past, and it worked well.  I have a pre-war Mauser converted to 35 Whelen, as well as a Browning BLR in 358 Winchester (308 necked up to 35 cal.), and either gun is as good an all around big game caliber as you will find for 300 yard and under  hunting.

I have never reloaded before and to be honest am kind of interested in giving it a try.Is this caliber easily reloaded since you have to resize cases.I am just asking because the whole reloading thing is foreign to me and a slight bit intimidating.I don't shoot a whole lot other than sighting in and hunting.

Buy it when you can,cause it's pretty seasonal when it comes out..Same for any of the Federal Fusion you run across.

FWIW..unless you have a bunch of Federal Brass to start out reloading,I wouldn't even bother. The Remington brass is junk IMHO and not worth the frustration to reload for most 35 Whelen Handi's.

I shoot the Hornady ammo in mine and it shoots quite well,but if I ever get the chance to start reloading thats what I'm gonna do. I live in northeast Ms and there is one store that had the Hornady ammo but it is tough on the wallet.

What kinda rifle do you have? I bought the Handi for me and my wife is gonna use the 45/70.I hear some have FTF issues.I hope that has been corrected.
 None of the ammo is what I would call cheap anymore.I am gonna try the Core Lokts out and maybe they will be just fine.

Oh by the way....The Chevy ads popping up are gettin kinda silly. ??? ??? >:(

Bought mine last year when they went on sale in Ms. 22 inch barrel with new synthetic stocks. Haven't had any ftf, but keeping fingers crossed. Its all good so far. The rest I've been shooting on is not the best but still at slightly over an inch. Me thinks I can do better especially since all I've done to it is clean it when I got it and went shooting.

Back in October 2009 I posted about 35 Whelen ammo I didn't know existed. It was Hornady 35 whelen Lt Mag ammo with 200 gr SP bullet. I believe the store that stocked it was Louisiana Outdoors in Pearl River, LA. Do a search for 35 Whelen ammo and my previous post will come up (at least it did for me). I understand this store had an exclusive on this ammo. I know I've not seen it anywhere else and this place had 4-5 boxes at that time. This would be about the time they'd start stocking up for hunting season, assuming they still carry this particular load. Good luck.

Van's sport shop in Brandon Ms. usualy stocks the Hornady Light magnums and other Whelen ammo. Last year the Hornady was $28.00 a box.

I reload for a bolt gun that I put together myself on a Savage 110 action.  It is not a difficult caliber to reload, especially if you do a true neck sizing.  You should be able to do just that for either a bolt gun or for the handi.  The only problem with full-length sizing (other than a little shorter case life) is the tendency to set back the shoulder if you do not get your die set up right.  A good neck sizer is a good investment in this case.  BTW, the cheapo Remington Corelokt 200 grainers have always shot accurately from my gun - as a matter of fact - better than any 200 grain handloads I have done  :'(.  The heavier bullets (225 and up) are very accurate in my handloads.

I am gonna give the Remmy's a try.Like the gunsmith said,the bullets shouldnt be to much of an issue with this gun vs a 150 lb deer.I just hope they are accurate and somewhat consistent.I am truly looking forward to seeing how this caliber performs.Oh.....Thanks Tim for the heads up on the Nosler ammo.

You're welcome, just didn't want you to try and buy em only to find out that the whole world found out about em before you did and they were out of stock, it's happened before, so I don't post on the forum when a guy is looking for something hard to find or a good buy.  ;)
