Thanks for the post, Swampman.

Assoc. Press:
"Authorities say the blast was similar to what is used at high school and college games to celebrate a touchdown. Sheriff's officials say a gauze-like material soaked in an unknown chemical caused an explosion near the legs of 37-year-old Ian Altman.
The explosion lodged small pieces in Altman's legs and arms. He finished the race, then later was briefly hospitalized with a fever and possible infection
."

I don't know; these short news flashes (I can't even call this an article) get harder and harder to make any sense out of. Cannon blast; is the reporter talking about a signal gun, or something else? An explosion near the legs - gauze soaked in a chemical - particles of which were embedded in a mans legs and arms???
A lot more information is needed to even begin trying to make heads or tails out of this story.

The witnesses are reading this news bit and wondering if they were even there.... Editor: "Call it a cannon blast, that will get the reader's attention!"

Durango is a funny place.  It used to be a little backwater town with a coal-burning tourist railroad that was the major attraction but it has filled up with rich yuppies in recent years and there has become something of a feud between the newcomers (and their big city ways) and the old timers.

GCBP,
I'd say that the article you found does at least make much clearer some of the details of this 'boy's prank'.

GG,
Funny place is right, some of those comments come close to saying that the young pranksters should have been patted on the head, and then told how creative they were.
