30 30 bolt action
« on: July 01, 2010, 08:16:31 AM »
My nephew will start hunting this year, My brother wanted to get him a 3030 bolt action rifle, I told him I don’t think you can buy new in 3030 in bolt action any more, am I over looking something, I told him there are a lot of good calibers for a kid to start out with, but he hunts with a Marlin 336, Not the best rifle for a kid to start off with, he wanted to just have one Ammo to deal with in Hunting season, he wants to get him something new, and he is not a fan of the single shots,

I don't know why a Marlin 336 wouldn't be a great rifle to start a kid with.  Have you thought about a .30-30 Handi Rifle?

What's the thinking behind the 336 Marlin "not the best rifle for a kid to start off with"??  Admittedly the ones I've handled recently are not as good IMO as the 1936 Marlin 30-30 that my dear departed Dad started me off with, but hey!  There's only been a few million kids over the generations that started with Marlin or Winchester leverguns--in plenty of calibers including 30-30.  Of course a lot of that took place before city folk started reading and believing gun magazines before heading out to the country to "hunt".  Not to disparage 30-30 bolt guns, but the 336 is a pretty good deer gun--for kids as well as adults.

The Marlin 336Y .30-30 Spike Horn 16" barrel is the bomb for kids.

If he insists on a 30-30 bolt action, a used Remington 788 or savage 340 is what's most common on the used market.  I too would look at a new marlin lever, or a cheap single shot if $ is an issue.  I know its a big leap, but if he can deal with TWO cartridges during deer season, then the sky is the limit as far as caliber and make and model.  A nice Ruger model 77 Compact in 243 or 7mm/08 perhaps??

You know I drove cars without seat belts for years, I carried a 1911 in the Army for two years, and my first deer rifle was a military surpluses 303 British, 4 of my younger brothers all started out on 336 Marlins, they still have and use, But today you have seat belts in cars, and child car seats, I have a 1911, seems it has a frame, grip, and barrel safety on it, but my new hammer handguns Sig, Rugers and S&W all have decockers on them, and even the new Marlins have hammer block safeties, the older ones were placed in half cock, a little hard for a kid to do, Talk is cheap, but when it comes to your kid, or in this case my nephew, you want him to be as safe as possible, I own and hunt some with a 336, letting the hammer down or on half cock, on a live round with small cold glove covered hands is not safe.
This is my fault. I should have phrases the question, Differently (Is there in current production fire arms manufacturer that produces a 3030 bolt action Rifle.) I was pretty sure no one did but thought I would double check.

New Marlins have safetys.  They will only fire with the safety off.

Lever 30/30 is probably the most used rifle for kids starting hunting here in Pa.
People worry about multi operation controls on rifles for kids, yikes they handle those game controlers
quite handy. My 6 yr old grandson is shooting light Unique over cast practice loads in his
336. Bench of course untill I get a stock cut down or find a cut one.

You're right in that you can't buy .30-30 bolt actions new anymore, but why would a .30-30 not be a good starting rifle?  It's got plenty of killing power within the ranges that I'd trust a younger shooter to shoot, and the recoil is relatively mild.

In the used market there are Remington 788's and Savage 340's for bolt action .30-30s.  I own the Savage and it shoots ok, but I'd prefer the Remington - it'll just cost you a LOT more.

I also have a Marline 336 .30-30 as well though.  It's actually more accurate than the bolt action Savage.  If he's already got that, it'll be hard to improve on except for range (where a .25-06 or 7mm-08 or the like might be something to step up to when he's ready).  And as said, the new ones have a safety (or even the not as new ones - I'm pretty sure they've come with a safety for the better part of 15-20 years, but I may be mistaken).

I agree on the de-cocking not being real safe. When my son used a lever I told him if he got in the spot to need to de-cock point it in a safe direction and shoot it. Would rather spook deer than him get shot in the foot.
Thanks,

If you're not concerned about spooking game, wouldn't it be a bit less wasteful to simply point it in a safe direction and cycle the cartridges out slowly and then just lower the hammer on an empty chamber?
