Lots of discussions on it, made from '73-'81 in 45-70 and 44mag, trapdoor loads only in the 45-70 due to the cast iron frame, great cast bullet barrel, use the search and select just this forum from the list, spell it correctly tho, it's shikari!!  ;D

Thanks Tim,

The guy wanted too much for it and wouldn't meet me half way to do FTF so it won't happen.

Glad to find out it isn't up to par with a modern Handi before I called him.

A local pawn shop has a .44 for about $250.00.  Can you scope them?

I have the 45-70 version.  Love it, but I do respect the frame and silver soldered barrel lug, so I limit it to trapdoor loads.  It is more accurate than my BC ever was.  That was the reason for the BC's departure.  Don't know about the 44, I've read that they were made with Ballard style rifling and tighter bore specs than the over bore later ones, but have no first hand knowledge.  If I ever find one in the $200 range, I'll find out.

Last time I looked at Bud's Gunshop a new 44 was $211.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

But how will it shoot?  The .44s get mixed reviews.  You don't know if the bore is oversized or not.

My local shop has had a mint 45-70 Shikari for a month at $225. Very light gun. Straight stock worries me a bit...lol. Not tapped for scope base. Rear sight is now Dooskil (sic). Action/barrel might be loose. Not unusual. Same shope had a very mint 12 gauge Tracker 2 for $110 and a 20 gauge Topper 88 with slight rust/congealed oil for $80.

I had one in .44Mag years ago and it shot everthing well, inc. roundballs. The conicals, 215-250ishgr., sized .429, mostly went to about the same POA (open sights when I could still see) for a given load, and I pretty much used the 6-9gr of Unique loads that I used in my revolvers back then.
All in all I wish I still had it. The $85, or so, that I got out of it in hard times didnt really do much for my 'survival'. Oh well, its all just 'stuff'.........
