20 gauge Tracker ll slug gun ammo
« on: July 25, 2010, 12:04:34 PM »
I've been trying to put a dent in the hog population as of late, and my 20 gauge Tracker ll is doing it's job a little too well.

Had to order another couple of boxes this morning!

My gun loves those Remington Buckhammers and cloverleafs them at 75 yards and shoots as good as my centerfire handi's at 100.

Tried several other slugs like Hornady SST's but the Buckhammer just doesn't let me down.

Cabela's has them on sale so I thought I'd pass it on so anyone want's to they can stock up for the season.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I've tried only three brands in mine.

Tried the Remington Buckhammers in 3" and they shot like your lightfields, and got two deer last season.

Then I experimented with some Remington Copper solids, and they were pretty much inconsistent and spread out, and I was glad to shoot the last round.

Also tried the Hornady SST's and my gun hated them.   Never could get a group.

Went back to using my Buckhammers and I'm earholing those hogs anywhere from 40 yards to 75 DRT.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

My 12ga Tracker II was the same way with the SST's There is another thread going about the Federal barnes expanders. hopefully I'll get a chance to shoot them in my 20ga USH tomorrow. Work has been crazy for about the last week. I bought my 12ga Tracker II barrel off MSP Ret and he told me that barrel really likes the buck hammers.

After I tried the last two brands in mine, I had to ask myself why am I doing this?

It shoots those buckhammers so well and they are fairly easy to find and usually the price is right so I finally figured I might as well stop experimenting, and stick with what works.

I'm just stocking up for deer season, and two more hogs took a dirt nap this weekend.   Love that Tracker ll.

When I bought my Tracker II 20ga from BobG he gave 4 boxes of the lightfields he had only shot it once. when I got it back from the smith after the drill & tap I put a Tru Glo 2X red dot on it. Put a 6" shoot n c at 30 yards first shot was low and left just off the target adjusted 2nd shot was dead center moved it out to 65 yards and you saw the results in that pic of my next 3 shots. The lightfields are all I have shot in it no sense in trying anything else. I have switched to a simmons pro diamond 4X32 shotgun scope so I need to resight it.

I'm amazed at the accuracy of these slug guns.

Last year was my first year hunting strickly with the slug gun.  I've lived in South Texas all my life and grew up shooting rifles from everything from rabbits to deer, and the shotgun was only used for birds of different varieties, and mounting a scope on a slug gun was the furthest thing from my mind because I had no reason to.

Last year I got on a lease near my home that is out in pretty open farm country, and most of the game is concentrated in a creekbed that stretches for several miles connecting to other wooded areas, and the rancher insisted that we hunt with bow and shotgun only for fear of stray rifle rounds possibly doing harm to some nearby farm houses.

I'd already had four complete Handi rifles so I picked up a couple used 20 guage barrels, with one being a smooth bore Pardner, and another in a 20 gauge Tracker ll.
The Tracker ll came with a scope rail, and I drilled and tapped the Pardner and mounted a 4 power BSA on the smoothy and I've got a Simmons 3 x 9 on the Tracker.

Both shoot like my Handi centerfires and I've got a lot of confidence in my Tracker.
Just haven't used the Pardner on game yet, but I will.

If I point, and pull the trigger on my Tracker ll, it's on the ground for good.

I just picked up a Tracker II barrel in 20 ga. but have not gotten a chance to shoot it yet.  Nice to hear that so many have gotten good results with the buck hammers.  Does the 3" seem to shoot better than 2 3/4"?  I had thought about trading the barrel previously, but these stories might be changing my mind!

I just shot some 3" federal barnes expanders out of my 20ga USH and you would need a yard stick to measure the group. I had such good results with the lightfield 2 3/4 in my Tracker II 20ga that I haven't tried anything else in it.

I've shot both, same accuracy, but for deer hunting I prefer the 3" and it's just for the extra umph!

The Lightfield EXP slugs are getting a tad bit expensive...I might try out some Buckhammers for a slightly lower priced range session.  If I can get the Buckhammers to group as good as the EXP's then I will make the switch.
