Cheek straps
« on: August 09, 2010, 03:51:42 PM »
I plan on buying a half scale 1841 six pounder this fall from CannonMike.  I want to build a field carriage for the barrel but don't have any metal working tools/experience.  I am trying to figure out the best way to fabricate the cheek straps.  From some preliminary searching It sounds like it might be possible to do with a torch and hammer.  I saw That someone posted that Dom hade Mae some for him.  If i can find someone to make them for me would it be better to have them fabricated and then cut my cheeks to fit the straps or cuts the cheeks and send them off to the fabricator to be made?  This is assuming someone can fabricate them for me.  I would assume that someone with Dom's experience can fabricate them to the correct size for a half scale field carriage without actually having the cheeks.

The other option would be to find a local shop that can fabricate them for me.  There are a few metal shops locally that I can approach.

What do the experts have to say?

You absolutely CAN fabricate them with torch (or makeshift forge) and hammer!  That's how people used to do it.  Until I did my trunnion caps, I'd never done it before.  I also had never made my own bolts before, but now one of my most wanted tools is a set of taps and dies.  With anything, until you try, it's a new experience and can be somewhat intimidating.  If you have any desire to try it, I'd say do so.  If you want to pay someone, then Dom certainly would be able to do it.
