Question about Hawes Western Marshal revolver
« on: August 06, 2010, 03:05:53 PM »
Snooping around the local gun shop today, and found a single action Hawes Western Marshal revolver in 44 mag.  The gun has been carried, with the blueing wear to show for it, but the action is tight and in good time.  Basically, it looks like a slightly oversize 3 screw Colt S/A.  And that brings up the question - How durable are these guns in the 44 mag. chambering?  I need another S/A 44 mag like I need a hole in the head, but the price is right ($225.00), and I liked the way it felt in my hand.  I have seen reviews in the past that spoke highly of these revolvers in 45 lc, but wonder if anyone has experience with the higher pressure 44 mag version?

Thanks

Larry

Bigeasy, my dad gave me one about 40 years ago in 357 magnum. I later owned one for a time in 44 magnum. They were made by J.P. Sauer and Sons, I believe in Western Germany, and they are stout. You may get tired of it, buy you won't shoot it loose.

Bigeasy,

As Dee stated, they are made by J. P. Sauer and Sohn or Germany, the same guys that produce the SIG SAUER line of firearms.  I had a 6" .357 Mag Western Marshall back in the early 1980s and once I found it's load it was a shooter.  The only reason I let it go was I wanted a revolver with adjustable sights.  It was a solid revolver, good tigger, every bit as good as the Colt copies being imported today for CAS and SASS shooters.

I do not have any experience with the .44 mag but would expect one to be as solid as the .357 I had.

Thanks for the info guys.  I guess I thought about it too long.  Went back last Sat., and it was gone.  Just as well, I got my eye on a nice Sako 243 lever action.......:)
