Good 9 MM loading for hogs/hitting power and penetration?
« on: July 31, 2010, 08:38:56 AM »
I normally use 115 grain FMJ bullets in my 9 MM pistols.  Bought and tried some CorBon +P 115 gr. JHP ammo the other day, they have a harsher kick and less accuracy, thinking I might be better off with a heavier bullet like the 147 gr.  I am looking at penetration primarily to use as protection agains wild hogs as a back up with my Glock pistol.

What do you recommend in something more powerful than the usual 115 FMJ cheapies?

Thanks.

NO offense...but nothing in the 9mm lineup is appropriate.

“back up with my Glock pistol”

I think that backup is a key word.  I have carried a 9MM as a backup while out deer and black bear hunting.  I did not consider it as a primary arm for the hunt.  Frankly I was hoping to get the opportunity to test the third or fourth generation 115 grain Silvertips we had been issued on live tissue.  This was after the 9MM controversy following the Miami shoot out.

I hit a buck with a 140-grain bullet from my 270 Winchester and the buck dropped after a 30-yard run.  He was on the ground with his head and front up.  One shot at about 15 yards in the neck finished him off.  I recovered a nicely mushroomed Silvertip off the spine.

There are those that would argue the 9MM is not adequate but we are talking a back-up arm in this case.  I would explorer this round.

I suspect it will be louder and produce more recoil.  You can train with low price ammo and become accustomed to the report and the recoil.

I worked with women who had no problem with the 45 ACP; so do not let recoil from a 9MM be a factor.

I have shot a lot of low velocity 38 Special wadcutters out of a 357 Magnum, what is fine for target shooting, but on duty I carried the hottest 357 round I could for the job, and I carried the same round when hunting.

Many times I carry a 22 pistol for grouse when out hunting in the fall.  If I had to use it as a backup I would use it.  I believe it is far better than a sharp stick in the eye.

I hope to use a .223 Mini-14 or my CZ bolt action rifle in .223 if I do any hog hunting.  The Glock would be available if I get into any brushy situation, the 15-17 round magazine would be nice insurance.

I got the idea after reading an article in American Rifleman magazine for the August issue.  The writer pointed out how superior the .38 super is compared to the .45 ACP and I had attended a police training seminar years ago where the SWAT teacher pointed out that the police officers should use their 9 MM pistol over their AR-15's if they have to shoot through a wall.

I would think a heavy full metal jacket bullet, with as much of a flat point ( meplat ) would be best. So long as it feeds/ functions.

If you are looking for some deep penetration try the Fiocchi 115 grain FMJ. These will go through 7 inches of spruce wood. The above poster suggested the Double Tap 147 grain FMJ +P flat point. These are loaded with the Montana Gold bullet and would be hard to beat in a 9mm for a field load. A poster on another site killed a hog with this load and got 23 inches of penetration. He was using a carbine with a 16 inch barrel. The MG fmj is a tough bullet. Elmer Keith wrote that the 9mm was better at putting down livestock than the 45 acp. They were using fmj bullets.
