A farmer's request.
« on: July 09, 2010, 07:08:28 PM »
I got a visit at the store today from a local farmer... he lives a couple miles away from me. Apparently he has a bit of a coyote problem and they are bothering his cows and calves in the fields. He has about 400 acres and about 1/2 of it is pasture land with grazing cows. He asked me if I had any varmint guns and would I want to come over and try to thin out the coyotes. I told him I just got a 22-250 and would love to come thin 'em out for him. ;D His only stipulation was... "don't shoot my cows" :D :D He even told me he has some round bales I could set up as a blind. I'm pumped about it... guess what I'll be doin' in my free time. ;)

Awesome, coyotes are exactly what the 22-250 (22 Varminter) Remington cartridge was designed to solve.  Good luck and have fun.

Good luck with the Coyotes. Yep I would think a .22-250 would provide the right medicine to fix up said Coyote.

There is a Santa Claus.

What's your plan to draw them in?

Well first off, go ahead and use a firearm, your truck doesn't look like it can take anymore.   ;D

Here are a few things that worked for me, when I have tried to be intentional about coyote hunting, rather than seeing one as a consequence of deer hunting:

I bought a "quiver rabbit" for about $ 30; its basically a rabbit hand puppet sitting on top of an out-of-balance battery-powered motor on a stake that you stick in the ground. The motion catches their eye and they start easing in on it, and they are so fixed on it they don't see you. Its great for a high spot in a large open field, if the hay is cut down to about 8" or less.

I saw on some show where the guy called one in and it was trotting; he trained his gun on it and yelled "yip" like a pup; it stopped and popped its head up just long enough for him to get a still shot. I tried this and it worked. Apparently it doesn't have to be a very good yip, just a real one, not recorded.

Also, once I was sitting in a tree stand looking over a large field, and about 400 yards away some crows that had been gleaning in the field for an hour just took off all of a sudden and it caught my attention because I was hoping they wandered my way. The reason they took off was cause a coyote was walking by. So you might watch for some other animals reacting to a coyote's presence.

take an old arrow shaft drill a hole through the knock and attatch a turkey feather with a few inches of fishing line. stick it in the ground about 75-100 yards out and any little bit of wind will cause it to move. The movement will catch thier attention

It's best to partner up with another guy. Call em up wind and have the better shooter watch the down wind side. Often they try to wind you but if someone is a good long range shot the smart ones are dead before they smell ya. Also a pair is coming shoot the rear one first and start yelping sometimes the front one will pause.

The old standby Circe dying rabbit call has worked well for me. They're cheap too!

For Decoy I have used the Rabbit you can buy.  But one that is a lot les expensive is a cat toy you can get at Wal-mart or almost any per store.  It's a small pedistal with a plastic stick that stands about 18" high with feathers on top.

One day while watching a Coyote coming in, a second one that I did not see got to the decoy and ripped the feathers up.  So the next time I wanted to go out I glued some fake rabbit fur around a styro foam ball and stuck it on top.  Works just as good as the feathers did.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
