Thoughts on the hitch mounted platforms for game?
« on: June 09, 2010, 07:34:16 AM »
Has anyone seen or used one of these?   http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0025764521480a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Product_liberal&QueryText=Valley+Industries+Heavy-Duty+Cargo+Carrier+&sort=all&Go.y=7&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&Go.x=22&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23

Last December I totaled my pickup and now I have an SUV.  I won't have my nice truck bed to put deer in and I don't really want to be throwing a deer or hopefully a bear in the back of the Tahoe.  I've seen these hitch mounted cargo carriers, but I've never used one.  It looks to me like it would just be the ticket for a little extra cargo & wild game.

Anyone have any thought one way or the other?

They are shin busters and a pain to get stuff out of the back of the truck.
They do work well to get stuff to and from while on the road. Leaving the trunk area open for a cooler or kids stuff on road trips.
I am an SUV guy.  Have two now.  I just haul the deer up in the roof rack and tie it down.
Found two different ways to get the deer on the roof easy.
Just wash the truck before the wife sees the blood.

Does the blood ruin the paint if you don't clean it off soon enough?

Had an SUV for a short time a few years ago (went back to a pickup!).  But anyhow I bought one of the hitch haul carriers and carried a couple deer on it.  It works well for that and is low to the ground and easy to load.
If you have to transport your deer, etc on roads that are dusty, snowy, slushy, wet, etc you want to wrap it in a tarp, otherwise it will be a mess when you get home!

As Mcwoodduck said it's a shin-buster and makes it harder to get things out of the vehicle, but is a nice table or seat for a lunch break.
I carried it in the back of the SUV most of the time and then put it on when I had something to transport.

Here is the one I have:
http://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Cargo-Carrier/Valley/V90590.html

I have never had a pickup; it would be nice but it would not serve my needs 99% of the time.
This cargo carrier has been my surrogate pickup; I have brought all my deer home on it.
I have also brought a home freezer, a hot water heater, dozen bails of pine straw.

I also have a 4' x 8' fold up trailer that I roll out get out maybe 3 times a year.
It occupies a 3' x 5' space in my garage most of the time.

Haven't noticed any place where blood ruined the paint.

My brother built his own, it's heavier and wider than factory models and has a solid bottom, which helps keep things cleaner. We use it quite a bit on our Nov. trip every year and have had up to 3 deer on it. We just pull into a car wash and use the hand wand to clean it off. It sits lower and is a lot easier to load. I thought he was crazy for building it, but I will probably have one before next fall. Just a word of warning, they can bottom out if you hit a steep dip and don't forget it's back there when you back up.

I appreciate all the great advice guys keep it coming.  I couldn't agree more abuot being betting off building my own.  Everytime I see one of these they usually look a little weak and flimsy, but the idea behild them is sound.  I am especially interested in the type that fold up.  I can see how these would be tough on shins and more of a challenge when backing up.  That's why I think I'd be better off getting a fold up type.  I just want one that's built well and will hold up.

I use one on my Jeep Wrangler where space is at a premium and it has been handier than a pocket on a shirt. Mine is not a fold up but works well for anything I have needed to haul.

Get a cheap blue or brown poly tarp from Wally World, line the cargo area with it, when you unload the critter hose the tarp off, if it's too nasty ditch it. Your out a coupla bucks for the tarp.

The tarp is a good idea, but I think I'll be able to use this for other things as well.

I've used one for years.  For hauling game the tarp is a good idea.  I have found that finding a Rubbermaid type tote or two that fit on the rack is a good option. First it keeps things secure, second it is suprisingly good at keeping the weather off gear, and third it makes unloading gear to get at the tailgate faster.  I also have one of the giant white coolers that will do the same thing.  You may consider this if you will be traveling with game in hot weather, skun and quartered I think a person could fit three deer in one.

I've got the folding model for my SUV,

It was the best investment for traveling/hunting that I've made in a while. I always hated carrying stinky gas cans around when hunting in the desert(s) around here, now I can keep them seperate outside the vehicle. Coolers carried inside the cargo area take up a lot of space, and rattle around a lot too. I wrap a tarp around everything like a burrito, and bungee it all down to keep off the dust.

Years ago, before these were around, I went antelope hunting in my Land cruiser, I wrapped the antelope in a tarp and put it in the back of the cruiser. when I got home I found that the tarp had leaked, funneling all the blood right onto my sleeping bag and pillow. I tried dry cleaning for the bag, but it was basically ruined. it made a heck of the mess in the carpet of the vehicle too, I got it out after many, many cleanings and baking powder treatments.

I bought a double reciever hitch for the rack and a hoist frame, and use the lifting frame over the rack, nowadays I just hoist up the game, gut (if I haven't in the field) and skin it, then put a large cooler on the rack, quarter up the animal and Ice direct from the hoist to the cooler and it's just so much easier to handle and so much cleaner to do and deal with.

The folding model makes getting around through washes and dips easier, when folded up, but harder to access things out of the back of the vehicle. still they are the best inventions for hunting/traveling with an SUV that has came along!!

What brand did you buy?  Some of what I've seen looks flimsy, and some look stout.  I'd rather buy something that's going to last.

I have a Hitch Haul brand. It is in the category of light construction. If the weight is balanced it seems to do fine, it is bolted together, and it would seem to be weaker because of that. I have hauled eight bags of salt on it and had no problems. I didn't go all that far and honestly would not trust it with 350# of anything I liked, but it performed as advertised.

If you expect to use yours near rated capacity I would definitly get a welded model. I had a local shop weld up a rig to haul my portable fish house on, now that rascal is stout. They just took my idea and built one up, was actually the same price I paid for the Hitch Haul. I had them raise the platform for better clearance, it just does clear the liftgate, but about zero chance of getting hung up when getting onto lake near ice heaves. I high center before the rack would drag.

Best one I've seen was set up for TWO reciever hitches.  One was the normal one in the center... a second small reciever was then welded to the right side of the frame and the male side was welded onto the hitch haul to mate up with it.  Positively solved the balancing problem on that guys van.  I'm going to have it done to both of mine this fall.  They are handy, but every time I use mine I cuss myself for not having a pickup.  I have a stock trailer, a flat bed trailer and a utility trailer.  I pull them with my Suburban.  I still use the hitch haul sometimes.  When I do, I cuss myself mightily for not buying a pickup.

Got a brand new one for LESS THAN $50.00 from Sportsmen's Guide. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=608013

I have a PU truck, have hauled all my deer and hogs in a PU bed over 17 seasons.  Now, with a topper over the bed (first time), I needed a rack, down low, for the 5 mile ride to the Processor.  One or two (Max) at a time.

No more.  No less.  For me, this INEXPENSIVE platform is JUST RIGHT.

I like mine when I am hunting alone because it is lower than the pickup bed, thus easier to load a deer.  It is much easier than loading one on the rack of an ATV.

Several men in my hunting group use them and about half have installed theirs on the front of their truck or SUV.  You can drive up to the deer in judge distance better, and at night the truck lights help also.  Mine uses a rear receiver.

I have one with an aluminum grate and a hitchr that allows me to raise and lower the platform.  In the raised position I can pull an ATV trailer by hooking up to the ball that is mounted to the hitch unit.  For a few bucks more, this is a nice feature.

I agree and would pack it accordingly.  I'd primarily plan to use it for the carcas of game taken in the field and that's a direct trip from the field to the freezer.

Concur with teddy12b:

Bicycles get locked to the carrier.
Pine straw, quikrete, freezers and water heaters go straight home from the store.

If someone wants my deer that bad, they are welcome to it.
In fact, if someone asked for my deer, I would give it to them.

I built my own out of iron I had lying around the shop and what I didn't have I got from my pal at a cost of 15.00.
Wife wanted to take the Grand Cherokee instead of the truck on vacation. It helped with the grand kids gear.(Hint)
don't put the cooler on the exhaust side on a long trip, it melts ice in a hurry. Next trip a handy heat deflector made
from sheet metal worked wanders. Last year I hauled a doe on it on the back of my truck, very handy that close to the ground. ;D
