New to me NEF .30-30/.223
« on: August 01, 2010, 06:30:38 PM »
I just picked up a NEF rifle with two barrels .30-30 and .223 for a pretty good deal.  I've been really wanting a .30-30 barrel for awhile now to try some pointy bullets in it.  Is it worth reaming it out to .30-30 AI or not?   Had a buddy that shot a pronghorn with the .30-30 AI and 125 grain Nosler BT out of a Contender pistol.  He was getting 2700 fps out of a 14" barrel, which seemed pretty impressive to me.  So which do you handi holics like to shoot better the plain old .30-30 or the AI version?

The .223 barrel is a superlight (or so I was told) which I'm not sure I'm interested in since I have an Ultra in .223.  This barrel is an ejector so I'm guessing it is more than likely a 1:12 twist like my Ultra's ejector barrel.  I'll check it when I get a chance.  Pretty happy with this snag of a two barrel rifle, I always wanted to fit an extra barrel to a frame but never got around to it. Still think I'd like a different cartridge chambering.

Congrats!! I get 2875fps in my 30-30AI Handi using the Sierra PH SPT 125gr using 375Win brass which is made for the 60kpsi pressure of the 375Win. I'd make sure the barrel is a modern 30-30 barrel tho, tho older M158 30-30 barrels were soldered to the underlug, got one of those too that I considered rechambering to 30-40 Ackley. Just depends on whatcha want to do with it and what else you have, I rechambered mine by hand just to see how well it would do, but it certainly won't do anything a 308W or 30-06 won't do, but it does give it more useful effective range if you don't have one of it's big brothers, it becomes an effective 300yd deer chambering with spitzer bullets.  ;)

Well I'vE got a few .30 caliber rifles so this one is just a toy to play with really.  I've got a M94 .30-30, M93 .300 Savage (well almost), JC Higgins .30-06 and a 1917 in .300 H&H, so you can see I didn't need another .30 caliber.  Talked to a loacal smith who has the reamer and he will do it fo $50, so to me that sounds better than renting the reamer myself.

My buddy told me to use the .375 Win brass as well. Same reason said it could handle more pressure.  Thanks I'll be considering it a little harder.
