I have temp custody of a marlin 1894 44 mag.  I knew the gun had last shot about 50 rounds of commercial lead bullets handloaded with about 8.0 grains of unique, hell I was there.   That was a year or two ago, the bore showed it was never cleaned.  I swabbed it realized it was leaded fired one round jacketed ammo then cleaned nowthe bore looks good.  I fired  10 rounds of my 250 grain rcbs keith bullets, it shot decent as far as groups but I did not get to clean it yet.  Is it possible to shoot lead sized at .430 in a micro or would I have to buy a larger sizer die to get it to to shoot without leading. I wont be able to keep this gun as its a friends.  I got to clean up after his house fire and store until he can get new place and safe to store it in.   I figured I could use it as a test gun before I bought one.  Any help apreciated.  SN

We're very sorry to hear of any house fire. Best wishes on the recovery.  The conventional wisdom is for fat bullets in m/g Marlin barrels. You might get away with .430, you might have to go .431 or .432.

My 1894 would not shoot .430 with any accuracy, but .431 works great.

Accuracy was decent with my .430'scat testify as to leading yet.  If they shoot better with 431 or larger I may have to get me one.  It would suck sizing two different sizes of 44's or do you folks just size large and use 431 or so in all 44 cals.  SN

Bummer having to buy a different die but if it could be one size fits all not so bad.  I cleaned the rifle, no lead, two patches and a nice bright bore.  Tried two five shot groups with my light load 6.9 of 231 accuracy was poor, but then again it was only 11 degrees outside.   Maybe it was the indian not the arrow.  Thanks SN
