45-70 / CCI 300 = OK ?
« on: August 09, 2010, 05:44:43 PM »
I have about 1500 CCI 300 primers that I was using to load 44 spcl .& now that I have a marlin 1895 I dont shoot the 44 much.  ::)
I would like to use them to load up some 45-70 with 405gr RNFP & 13.5gr trail boss.

would there be any problems using the pistol primers for this ?  ???

Personally, I would stick with what the reloading manuals tell you, for the powder you are using.

I have been told that the metal formed to make pistol primers is not as thick as the metal used in rifle primers.  I have also been told that pistol primers may seat deeper in the primer pocket as opposed to rifle primers, and that this can be a cause of mis-fires.  I have never tried to load rifle cartridges using pistol primers so I really don't have any experience with this scenario.  That said, since 45/70 is a low pressure cartridge and you are using Trail Boss you might want to load one or two rounds to see if it will work for you.  I still think that it is prudent, as HL stated, to stick with the info available in your reloading manual.

I've used them for light loads only.  When I make .457 round ball loads, they work well.  You do have to make sure not to jam on priming step, or it can push in too far.  I use large rifle also for these when I have extras.  It would probably work with any lighter loads though in the 34.3 to 43gr. RL7 loads as these are below trap door level and don't develop enough pressure to cause an issue with the thinner metal.  Up to you, but I'd probably make some test rounds and start in the low range and watch for any flattening.

I'll make a few test loads and get back with the results.  ;D
