  • I would rather be shooting!!
I went out to one of the new farms I am allowed to hunt this after noon. I sat there a little over an hour before I saw anything at all. Then this guy pops up out of his hole. That would be the top picture. Well after I shot him another one popped up out of his hole and he was so close I could not even get my scope to focus on him. He was just a big blur in the scope so I held the cross hairs center mass and pulled the trigger. I missed him I think the bullet went right over his head. :o I never shot at a Groundhog that close. He went back in his hole so I figured I would wait him out and hope he pops back out. I also decided to move the truck further away so when he did come back out I could at least focus the scope on him. While moving the truck there were 2 little ones that popped their heads up out of their hole that they were sharing. I parked the truck between the 2 holes so I could watch both and shoot witch ever popped up first. Well those 2 little ones popped their heads up first and I trained the cross hairs on them and would have had a double with one shot because they were perfectly lined up. I pulled the trigger and the gun went click. I forgot when I moved the truck I closed the bolt with out chambering a round. So by the time I did chamber a round they were no longer lined up so I just picked the one on the right and shot him. The other one disapeared down the hole so I waited for about 3 or 4 minutes and sure enough he popped his head out to have a look at what had happened. I pulled the trigger on him as well. I shot at 4 different Groundhogs in 20 or 25 minutes and got 3 of them. That ties my personal best day of 3 in a day. ;D I still have to make it back there tomorrow to get the one I missed. I have taken 5 out of that one field in the last week or so. ;D Well enjoy the pictures and take care Dale

I am loading my own now. My load is 40.5 grains of H-380, Hornady 50 grain V-Max Molly coated, Winchester brass and CCI 200 primers. This load shoots under a half inch in my 22-250. Take care Dale

I have a Rem 700 Vssf that likes 55 V-Max moly. Pretty much hits whatever I aim at up to 300yds. That's the farthest I've tried so far. I need to load some more of these. Bought some on this site but haven't had the time yet. 22-250 is a great round. Enjoy

I have 125 of the 50 loaded as of now. I am looking to buy some of those 55 grain V-Max Molly coated and load them with some 4064. Take care Dale

I took number 11, 12 and 13 tonight just before dark. The first one was at 350 yards, the second one was at 275 yards and the 3rd one was at 225 yards. They just cut this huge field and expect to take several more out of there. I missed a 4th one tonight in another field on the way home from the huge field. He was only about 150 yards or so I just plain pulled the shot and then he ran to his hole. I will try to get him tomorrow. This is like the 3rd time I have taken 3 in one day. I just can't seam to braek that record and get that 4th one in a day. :o :( Well take care Dale

Yes I was with the new Sierra 53 Grain HP Match bullet. The match HP bullet works real well on the Groundhogs. Take care Dale

I took my 14th and 15th Groundhog of the season today on my way home from work. The first of the 2 was at 250 yards and the second was at 150 yards. The Sierra HP Match does a good job on the hogs for sure. Here are a couple pictures. Take care Dale

You guys are sure lucky to be able to hunt woodchucks. I used to live in Illinois and hunted chucks on a regular basis. BUT now I live in Wisconsin and chucks are protected !! There is NO open season on chucks here. Nor can you hunt Badger, they too are protected. Not good. So I hunt Mr. Coyote with my .223. Works for me.
