270 Win & 130 grain Rem cork PSP

Hi All,

Picked up a 270 Win barrel, 22" and spent a lot of time getting a perfect frame/receiver fit.  Original pivot was not square to the breech so had to square it up and go the shim route, I like shims!   Well after getting that problem fixed the latch engagement was terrible.  Spent a few more hours and finally about 95% done.  Could be better, but I am going slow so I don't remove too much from the shelf.

I haven't reloaded anything for this gun yet, but I have shot 3 type of factory rounds and this thing really likes the Rem 130 grain PSPs.  Shooting 1/2 to 3/4 inch @ 100 yards.  Okay so now I know what bullet I want to use as I plan on hunting whitetail this fall with this rifle.  If anyone has had success trying to to duplicate the Remington 130grn PSP factory load for 270 win, please tell me how you did it.  l would like to get a deer with one of my handloads, but if I can't match the accuracy of this factory load then I will buy factory ammo for this fall.

My friend reloads for his .270 Savage Model 10 and has had very good luck with the GMX bullets from Hornady.  He'd tried several others, but he's getting 1-1/4" 300 yard groups now that he's got his powder and seating depth right.  They started at 3/4" at 100 yards which still isn't bad.  I think he might have a couple inches more barrel, but might be a starting point.  I don't have any small bores except my .22 rimfires.  Good luck to you though.

If I remember correctly Remington used to use IMR4350 for their 270 loads.Many years ago I found a load that shoots 150 gr bullets very well in every 270 I have tried, not bench rest accuracy but very good hunting accuracy (around MOA).Haven't seen a deer that can tell the difference in a 1/2" or a 1 1/2 " group anyway 
They all have been dead right there.Good luck on the 270, it is one of the best for everything.

BB, learning the 270 also. Didn't spend much time fitting, Pepsi can shim, seemed good. Aluminum compresses. Smashed the shim right out using 170g bullets w/43.5g W748. I don't like the big bangs. 19.5g Trailboss w/130g Hornady corelock SP. Little recoil and 2" at 100y. Thats my plan for this fall. I will be spending some time fitting with real shims. By the way, I had some FTF with the loose frame. Second time OK. My issue was jammed brass. One I had to beat out with a rod. I was using range brass. I got out the Dial caliper and some cases were 15 thousands too long. I think they were getting into the rifling. Not good. I trimmed them all to factory specks. Try again soon.

I buy cheap feeler gages from Harbor Freight to cut up for shims.  I stopped trying to JB weld them to the barrel pivot and starred cutting them real long and make two bends in them.  The shim stays put but can be removed with your fingers if necessary.  I tried an aluminum shim and it failed on the first shot.  Yeah, I noticed the brass streching on the 270 Win.  I have only shot factory loads so far and they have have grown by 6 to 7 thousands.  I have a very good frame/receiver fit, but I am still tweaking the latch shelf.  The gun pop open seems to encourage the brass growth.  I would assume a loose frame fit would do the same.  I haven't decided what dies to buy yet so I am going to get 2 or 3 more boxes of the 130 Rem corklokt and generate some more once fired brass.  Don't anyone tell Pete I am bringing factory ammo to the shoot in Grayling this weekend.

I have load the 270 for over fifty years.  I have had good accuracy out of the 130-gr. CL pushed by 59.0 grains of surplus 4831 and it's true replacement H4831.  I won a little shooting contest with that load.  Couple city slickers went away a little discussed with their new rifles.

Now days I have switched to 140 and 150-grain bullets in the 270 Winchester because I like a good exit hole.

Now days they show the 59.0 grains as a Max load, so caution is in the wind.

Our .270s like 53.4 gr H4350 Rem 9 1/2 primer. ( bullet speer 130, Rem 130, and Nos BT 130, all bullets listed have taken deer, you will have to see if this recipe works with Remingtons in your rifle.)
but 1 likes 56.8 gr H4831 w/ CCI 200 primer.
A few of my friends have started to use the H4350 load and have taken deer and they use a few different brands of guns, so it has been kind of an old reliable for hunting with my circle of friends. The Load was originaly worked up for speer 130 spitz but like I wrote above the other bullets have worked very well also, just checking and changing COAL to keep them out of the rifling. Enjoy the gun.

Thanks for the load information.  I will try the H4831 first since I have a pound sitting on the self.  If it shoots close to the factory loads I will be happy.

I am using the Remington Core Lock in both a 7X57, & a .30-06 with fantastic results. I'll bet you can get it to shoot in your rifle.

After quite a bit of testing various combos I found that my 270 Handi likes a reduced load of 52gns/ H4831sc with a Hornady 130gn Interlokt bullet. . This shoots around 2750fps and 1 1/2" at 100yds. I can't get it to shoot consistently with a hotter load. The 20" barrel limits the effectiveness of this great cartridge. Wish I would have gone with the 25-06 or 280 with the 26" barrel.

My 270 loves h4350 53.4 gr col of 3.19 hornady 130 grain interlock. 1/4 inch 100 yards. First bullet I started reloading in this rifle and the last.

Again, went to the woods and the shop. 3 days. Bought the feeler gages at Harber freight. .005 got her right. Fired the 130g W/19.5g Trail Boss. 1650 FPS. 2" at 100y. Used some factory 150g, Federal. 12 to 14 high at 100y. No adjustment. The stuck cases and FTF were from cheap dies. I need a carbide set full length resize. The shoulders were off, using range brass. Some wouldn't seat. i don't shoot this enough to put this into it. I also need to load some full power loads and site it in with those. Then shoot at deer. Handyholic stuff, It's not just the rifles, Its all the other stuff too.

There's no such thing as a carbide bottle necked sizing die, carbide are only available for straight walled chamberings. Carbide dies aren't required for full length sizing even if someone made them, even inexpensive Lee RGB dies will work fine for the 270, that's all I used to use when I got my first 270 H&R.
