Which one has the least amount of muzzle flip?
« on: July 04, 2010, 08:21:02 PM »
The 40 S&W has more muzzle flip than the 45acp.
Which one would have the least amount of muzzle flip and why?

* Glock 23 (Compact 4" barrel)
* Smith & Wesson M&P (Compact 3.5" barrel)
* XD Sub-Compact (3" barrel)

Your opinions and experiences are appreciated.
Thank you, Bowhunter57

BH
I am reading into this thread.
Any small gun has muzzle flip--wel biguns also.
Most is subjective.
I just don't care for light guns and big calibers.

williamlayton,
You read correctly, sir and I agree with you. I had thought of a 40 S&W as a "back up plan" to my not getting a 45acp. However, I shoot 9mm and 45acp very well, but the muzzle flip that I've experienced with 40s does NOT impress me with being able to get back on target for quick follow up shots. :P

No matter what a person's shooting, if you're not hitting your target, nothing else matters. 8)

Sir I carry a Glock sub compact 10mm when off duty and it has less muzzle rise or flip than the 40 I carry on duty and the 10mm has great stopping/knock down power plus in my humble opinion I believe it shoots flatter than the 45acp I am a fan of just ballistics point towards the 10mm being just little better and it is not hard to shoot. Best of luck

Based on speculation from the point of physics, methinks the shorter barrel will have more perceived muzzle flip.  Also, one must consider the bore height above the hand.  Higher bore = more flip.

YMMV . . .

All three really would be about the same.  If muzzle flip, more then recoil in the palm of your hand is the issue, then I believe Glock makes a ported version of their .40 that should take some of the muzzle rise away and put it back on target a little faster.  When you put a major caliber in a sub compact handgun, the laws of physics are going to apply.  Even my little Glock 26 9mm jumps around some, compared to a full size platform.

This an interesting discussion.
Perceptions has a lot to do with it and the type weapons being compared.
The 10mm is a bear too me. Not that I can't shoot it--it just plain has more rcoil than the others.
Interesting, i have a Sig 239 with a .357sig barrel and a .40 barrel.
I like the recoil from the .357 better.
It is a snappierrecoil as compared to a heavier recoil with the .40S&W barrel.
Others may have different opinions.
The onliest 10mm I have shot was in a 1911 Government format.

My Glock 27 in 40 S&W doesn't have near the recoil
of my 1911 45ACP? It is a BUNCH louder though. Way too many variables
to make a blanket statement on which one has more flip of the guns you list.
I would wager that they would all be close to the same.
I too am a fan of the 10mm and even my 5ft 3in wife shoots it quite well.
it being a S&W 1076.

I once owned an S&W Sigma in 9mm and even with that small round I found the muzzle flip annoying. It didn't just rise straight up as expected but seemed to twist and flip out to the right, making recovery quite unnatural and slow, basically having to reacquire the sight picture and alignment after ever shot. That plus the crappy trigger made me glad when a fellow offered to swap a Luger for it, even though the Luger was a refinished clunker.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
