45-70 BC front sight
« on: August 07, 2010, 12:12:54 PM »
I am thinking of replacing the hooded target front sight on my 45-70 BC with an open sight, but are unsure of the height because it is a dovetail style and don't know the depth of dove tail. Any users done this and what should the height be? It has the WGRS rear sight on it? Also what is the height of a WGRS and the FP? I don't seem to get answers back from Williams on this. One more, Is the use of the williams .25 front sight riser a good idea? It looks like it locks the dovetails with set screws, could make it a bit easier to change sights. Got my 45-70 Talo a while back, truly a handi H&R with a real bark. Have only shot 25 or so rounds thru it.  Thanks   Ideal60

Lonewolf5348 uses a Williams FP and a .400" tall TC fiber optic sight on his 38-55, the correct Lyman 17A sight for the 45-70 BC is .494" tall, that's measured from the bottom of the dovetail to the center of the globe. I use the FP-TK with a .404" tall 17A front sight, that puts me 1½" high at 100yds with 405gr loads at 1500fps with the rear sight at the bottom of its travel.

Front sights heights are typically overall from bottom of the dovetail to top of sight. Note that the 3/8" dovetail is 'nominal', and often a bit oversize. To fit it to the barrel, FILE THE SIGHT, NOT THE BARREL. The actual dovetail height on the 17A series is, again nominal, about .090". Dovetail 'heights' are about the same Lyman to Lyman (ie, brand to brand) so one of their hunting blades or bead sights should fit pretty well. If you are going to use a rear peep you will need quite the 'guthook' of a front if you dont use a ramp. The ramp will also give it more of a 'finished' sporting rifle look, which I like.

Thanks for the help. I plan to order a Williams FP rear sight and use the current front sight. The added height of the FP should allow more range than the WGRS with the same front sight. For my 45-70 talo i am installing a weaver ramp, after i mill some more cross slots in it and a Bushnell Banner wide angle scope on it. Ideal 60
