A friend of ours is going to South Africa in a week and he was just told he should tip the cook on this 30 day hunt/ sight seeing adventure around $400, the trackers $300 the skinners, $200 each and of course the P.H. around $600 or more, he was told this by the S.A. outfitter.    Now there are five people going on this trip and it is broken up as 16 hunting days and 17 sight seeing.    These tips seem very high to me as in 2001 My wife and I did a simular trip for 29 days and the P.H. recommended much lower tips!    The prices I quoted were not total but per person.    Please help here, is this BS and outragous or am I wrong and have things changed that much since 2001?    By the way this is a hunt for plains game not dangerous game.
There is no such thing as over kill!!!!  :-)

Judson:

I have never hunted in Africa, but am somewhat familiar with the income of South Africans. Those amounts seem very high to me. It seemed high if it were for all five people, but if the cook is getting a $2000 tip, it seems like he could quit working for the rest of the year after he gets his tip.

If it were me, I would do some research. Perhaps Safari Club  International can help you.

For an American hunt of short duration, I expect to tip the guide 10%, and the cook about 2% or 3% of the cost of the hunt.

I would clarify this by saying "daily rate," not total of the hunt.  The total hunt cost can be significant when you add trophy fees.  When in Africa, I tipped our PH about 10% of the daily rate.  I tipped the entire camp staff (ten people) about the same.  This seemed to work very well.

I would be happy to suggest what you would likley do if you were hunting and touring with me or my company in RSA. However I have no idea what the details are on this trip.

It's typical to tip the PH 10% of the daily fee per hunter. if this is a 30 day hunt and the daily fee is 200 bucks a day that's a 600 dollar tip per hunter

The staff including skinners and cook are a much lower top of maybe 1/2 to be shared by all.

Now here is the deal, if the unscrupulous outfitter booking this gets the hunters and visitors to tip the staff enough money then he will not have to pay them. In effect the hunter is paying twice as the daily fee is already paying for their services.  This kind of thing is what causes so much grief for me. I hear all the time about the "bait and switch" that goes on and makes so many people apprehensive about hunting in Africa.

Hook up with a guy that has done this a while and has lots of references and you will have the time of your life. Choose poorly and you will have to question everything that happens. You are there to enjoy yourself not fight about every last detail during and after your trip!
