Kimber Montana - Range Report

Finally scoped my Kimber Montana .300 WSM with a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10 X 42 mm scope and shot it today.  I am greatly impressed by its fit, feel, function, and accuracy. 

The best 3 shot group with Federal Powershock ammo was .7 inches.  Recoil was very tolerable, but became more noticeable from 15-20 rounds.  After the 20th round I had enough, but it was dialed in at 2" high at 100 yards. 

I let the barrel cool between shots and especially between groups.  This is important for a light contour sporter barrel. 

Let's just say its a keeper.

Yes they are great guns.  I have heard so much bashing that I was going to sell it before I scoped it, but the gun shop owner said shoot it first then decide.  Good suggestion. 

BTW, last 2 five shot groups were under one inch.  Not bad with non-premium off the shelf ammo.

I am a Kimber rifle fan as well.  One of the Montana's is a 270 WSM that I have had for a while.  When I first got it the groups were not good and the usual bedding shims etc did not work.  When I recut the crown it became one of my most accurate rifles.

It stays sighted in which is most important.  Its last group was 2 shots at 200 yds into 1.5", just before that 2 shots went into 1/2" at 200 yds.  Those were VLD's with RL 22 and WLRM primers.

The Kimber Montana's are my 'new' ss/syn rifles.  I have been loading since 1953 and have other guns!

  When I first got it the groups were not good and the usual bedding shims etc did not work.  When I recut the crown it became one of my most accurate rifles.

Did you ever get back with Kimber and tell them about the work on that crown?  It is a shame to pay the price of that Montana and then have to do more work on it to get it to shoot!

No I did not tell Kimber.  Its not a shame!  Good grief all these guys do is hammer Kimber on the fact that they cost a few bucks and therefore should be just so.

I'm not a gunsmith and I can do afew things but for the most part if I need something done I'll have my gunsmith do it plus I can afford it.  I think bedding/trigger job are pretty common on factory rifles but if I had to crown one to get it to shoot I'd be on the phone to them.  Maybe they could correct something for future buyers of their rifles.

Not sure what they put in the water your drinking where you live, but you should consider going to bottled water.  Tha remark  about being a lawyer, was out of line sir.

I mentioned calling Kimber to let them know that they had a gun leave their facility that had a problem.  I would have given them the curtesy of acting on this problem.  I would not have gone on this or any other forum and make it sound like Kimber is putting out a bad product without them having the chance to address this problem sir!.

I have the exact same setup, what a great rifle and scope and yes it is a tack driver.
