« on: September 28, 2010, 02:25:05 PM »
I just got a BSA Sweet17 scope for my 17HMR and the turret says for the 17gr bullet, I like to shoot the 20gr. how accurate will the 20gr be using the turret for 17gr out past 100yards ? anybody try it yet?..... thanks..... Larry

my only guess would be to sight the rifle in useing the 20gr at 100yds then pull the top cap with the indicators on it to 100yds and you should be good and I think it might be good at 150yds also beyond that would have to be checked on target. I had a sweet 17 on my handi bull barrel and fireing the 17gr bullet was good up to 150yds useing the scopes indicator any further and they started to go off slightly. So I would just set up the scope as though the 20gr were 17gr and try it. Be careful not to loose any of the 3 little screws on the cap when you remove it,they are a bugger to find. (Lay a white towel under the rifle/scope when doing so and if you drop them they show up)

zero the scope at 100 yds and the round shoots so flat you'll be within an inch from 50 yds out to were it has lost so much it will not be effective against animals, paper is another world.
the nation that forgets it defenders will itself be forgotten

I had a BSA Sweet 17 on a converted .22 mag bolt rifle, and as long as the wind wasn't going too hard, could dial distances out to 300 yards.   Worked great for a couple of years, and was greatly assisted by use of a range finder.  As I got better at doped distances, I didn't use one so much, but when ammo started getting scarce, it became more useful to get a good distance reading, dial the distance on the scope.   made a lot more 1st round hits.  The reticle finally came loose (too much p/u bouncing).   As long as you keep an eye on the elevation adjustment knob location (they can get rotated out of position)/  I used some 20 grain v-max type and didn't see any real difference, once the combo was re-zeroed.   Out to 200 yards, it was still 1 & done.   With a little range work, you can figure what differences would be there between the 17 & 20 grain projectiles.
Will that bow kill an elk?     Sure.....but arrows are much more effective.
