Tell me about Boyds Stocks
« on: August 09, 2010, 07:09:40 PM »
DOnt know anything about them but am wanting a pepper laminate classic for a Weatherby Vanguard in 25-06.  Are they any good?  Any body else I should look at?  I know s&k had some super cool stocks and I was thinking about one for a remington but the website says they were bought by remington and it has been down since 09.

Thanks!

I believe Boyds is the supplier to several major firearms manufacturers.  Never heard any thing bad about them.

I put one on Ruger that I purchased cheap.  I bought it off ebay for around $60.  I am well satisfied with the fit and finish.

I have three Boyds stocks and I think they are very good low cost stocks.  The only thing I would like to see on them is some checkering for a better grip. Otherwise they are good looking and the fit is very nice. I had to do a little fitting to get the saftey to work, which wasn't much. I'm thinking I'll buy another one before long.

I have two for Savage rifles; one long action and one short action.
The short action was for the older staggered feed magazine and was
100% drop-in. The fit and finish were excellent. The long action was for the
newer straight feed. It required some fitting for the mag to feed properly.
Not a big deal. I'll certainly buy another.
I suggest that you buy directly from Boyd's.

Have not ordered any of Boyd's laminated stocks, but have gotten about 6 or so walnut stocks over last 4 years.   I've no complaints about service or the stocks I received.

I bought a Savage model 111 rifle off Gunbroker that has a Boyd's laminated stock on it and I am well satisfied.

I got one from Boyd's for a Savage 110 and it dropped right in with no fitting on my part. It is the thumbhole lam in the Jakarter. very light in over all weight and well balanced. got it on sale for about $85 shipping and all! I am very pleased with it.

I had one on a Mauser 98 that I wasn't satisfied with.  Very sloppy fit in the action area.  Wasn't even like it was just cut loose either as I still had to remove a lot of wood in certain areas just to have gaps left by the factory routing in others.

I ended up replacing it with a Richards Microfit stock.  The Richards was a bit rougher initially and required some more elbow grease to get it where I wanted it, but the end result was MUCH better IMHO.  They also have a much better wood selection.  The basic stuff is there if you just want something to hold on to, but they've got several types and grade of walnut, maple, myrtle, etc available if you want it.

Put a pepper laminate with the "lightening cuts" (that reduce the weight) on my Interams Mark X action that I barreled in 6.5-06AI.  Krieger bedded the action when they fitr the barrel.  Very happy with it.

The trigger adjustment screws in front of trigger kept the barreled action from dropping into the Boyd thumbhole varmint stock. I cut a small grove in the stock in front of the trigger which solved the problem. I plan on getting an other one for my other short action Remington 700  rifle. I glass bedded the action like I have don on my other varmint rifles.  Sept 1-10 Placed an order today but was back ordered untill Oct. I like the idea of having the same style stock on my 17 and 221 fireball rifles.
