Milling Oak Beams
« on: December 14, 2010, 03:13:44 PM »
A customer/friend dropped off a couple oak logs, asking me to mill them into 12" x the biggest beams i could get and leave them full length.

It was a cold day with the wind blowing and after loading the first log on the mill, the dang motor wouldn't start on my mill!  It's the first time it hasn't fired right off, and i FINALLY traced it to the fitting on the hose at the fuel tank.  It was sucking air at the end of the hose, so i cut it off and reinstalled the fitting.  Then the water was frozen from lack of windshield washer fluid!   AND worst of all, the logs were covered with frozen mud and i could see they weren't big enough!

Well, she knows i charge extra for muddy logs, but i still have to deal with it!!  AND then another FIRST happen!  The belt started slipping and a knob on the log pushed it off!  NOW, Like the frozen water tank, this one was on me...  I should have had windshield washer fluid in the water tank, amd the belt at the proper tension!

Anyway,  i got started milling and managed to get two beams milled out and this is the bigger one,

  I "barely" managed a 12"x12", and it's 15' long,

As you can see, i barely managed a 10"x11"x13' out of this one,

It sure is a lot of extra work when everything that can go wrong, does!  lol

It's the stuff we have here in the north that keeps it from getting 100* out all summer long, it's keeps all the poisionous spiders and snakes away, and it also keeps the ticks and chiggers away from my place too.  :)  Small price to pay, for all it does, wouldn't you say?  lol

  It's sunny 30* here right now...   8)
