getting rid of the safety...
« on: August 18, 2010, 11:39:20 AM »
how much trouble would it be to take the safety off of the top and fill the hole (weld it up?) and then have it ground down and refinished?  I'm thinking about getting a stainless model, would that effect the weld?  I'm not a welder and have no knowledge of this.  Doesn't seem like it would be hard to do though for someone with a clue...

I wouldn't be doing ANY welding in the safety area of a Rossi Model 92 bolt, because it's adjascent to the locking lug recess', which I would think are heat-treated, and the last thing I would want is a bolt to let go into my eye/face upon fiting because the locking lugs system had failed.

Although they can be bought for $20 or so, it only took me about 30mins to hand make a safety replacement plug - which then takes about a minute to replace.

Here's the photo tutorial, on making your own replacement plug, that I posted here some time ago:

Well... there ya' go then.  Welding is out...  I'll have to check out the plug idea.  I just want it to be unobtrusive and unseen.

hmmm.... not too bad.  By that, I mean... way better than anything I would have been able to do!  I just think that lawyered up safety looks like crap and isn't needed on a lever gun.  Seems the ones that are for sale that don't have a safety are twice the price of this version so I'm probably stuck with mod'ing one.

Could it be fit with a filler screw like goes in scope mounting holes?  Then I could loc-tite it or something to keep it from flying out and hitting me in the eye...

The hole's too big, and if you'll take the trouble to drive out it's cross/retaining pin, and remove the safety, you'll see the the safety detents extend beyond the sides of the safety shaft hole proper - the reason a replacement plug should have a flange on the top end to sover the divots.

The plugs,  whether you make one or buy one from  www.stevesgunz.com are held securely in place by that crosspin - accessible through the locking lug grooves when the bolt is open.

I used a toothpick & some laq thinner to remove the red/green paint from inside the stamped "S" & "F", around the old safety hole, making them fairly hard to see.

It's funny, that choctaw should metion Steve's safety replacement bolt peep, AND that you should also like it.

I like it too, a few years ago, when Steve was "working on it".

I couldn't wait, so I odered a Skinner Lo-Pro with a 6-48 stem, drilled/tapped my home-made plug 6-48, and mounted it in the lawyer hole of one of MY Rossi Model 92's:

I like it too... but it looks like something I would knock off of there the first time I used it.  I'm kinda hard on stuff sometimes.  Not due to intention but well, I just get fumble-fingered and stuff breaks.  I'd put that on there and then pretty soon I'd have a nicely filled hole and no peep sight.

Very cool, Rangr44.  Do you have an extra one lying around?  ;D
