Just curious because I don't know the back story on this. Why was BLM siezing the so called illeagal cattle in the first place?

I was wondering that too.  Seemed like some pretty important facts were left out of the story.

There are follow up video's on youtube. It had to do with the BLM trying to confiscate some of the Rancher's cattle without a court order.

Any link to a reputable source with specifics?

Well! I'm not a lawyer, but isn't a taped interview with the sheriff a reliable source? There are several more of the tapes on youtube where the Sheriff explains the whole affair. Just Google!

I have read about and seen on TV a bunch of these incidents in northern Nevada. Range Magazine, based in Carson City, report on conflicts between the feds and private citizens all the time. Been going on for years. I can't comment on this particular incident. I have read about some that sounded like the land owner was pushing the limits of the law and asking for trouble. BUT, many of the incidents are definitely the BLM stomping on peoples rights. Confiscating their property and putting them in jail for very questionable reasons. People in that country loathe the Feds and hate to cooperate with them on any level. You have to remember these folks in Northern Nevada have been in conflict with the feds since way before Claude Dallas murdered two game wardens back in 1981 and the locals called him a hero and helped him escape. My casual observation is that there are abuses on both sides. Like I said I can't comment on this story cause I don't know enough about it. Sometimes I side with the people. Sometimes it looks like the feds are on the right side of the law, BUT, sometimes the law is wrong to begin with. It's a complicated issue and you probably got absolutely nothing from this post......Sorry

Isn't a Sheriff with in his county the most the highest ranking law enforcement officer no matter what other agency state or federal come along? Due to the fact that the Sheriff is elected by the people.
All most all federal actions are illegal The Constitution charges the feds with providing for the defense, promoting the general welfare, and enumerating the people every ten years. All other powers are in the hands of the states or the people
Or do i have this all wrong?

Yes, but remember, he's tasked with enforcing the law.  They are not allowed to enact policy of their own accord.  That duty typically falls to a county council.  Not saying that this happened here at all, just putting that as a reminder.  Having admined the computer system for the county where code violations were tracked, more than once I had to remind the chief building official that I couldn't add a new violation type to the system without having a code to cite as justification behind the violation (ie, we couldn't just charge people with offenses that were made up on the fly).

Isn't the Sheriffs duty to also protect the people within his jurisdiction from illegal actions taken against them?
Because of his high rank shouldn't all other law enforcement agencies have to work through him?
I'm thinking that were I him and I caught these agents seizing property with out a legal right to do so they would be in my jail charged with felony theft. And I would be seeking warrants for those who sent them. But that's just me.

This video of the sheriff explaining the situation should answer those questions about authority and tell the whole story of what happened.
There is a series of three videos if your interested. This goes along with what I was trying to say in my first post. These abuses have been going on for along time there. Thats why the folks that live there hate the feds as much as they do. And rightfully so....IMO
